Scale is determined after the fact, based on the level of damage.

Sorry, but "JayCutlerWrld" is not a valid source, and 160 people died in Joplin. Worse than Joplin, before preliminary reports are even in?

Hyperbole like that is *not* helpful. It's dangerous enough without making shit up.

The only thing it doesn't tell you is whether the funnel has touched the ground. If it's touched the ground, you can tell the level of destruction. And if it's two miles wide, it's touched the ground.

As noted in the comments at the link below, radar can only estimate wind speed. The official ratings are based on damage indicators.

The 250 mb winds aloft were forecasted to be very strong today, and conducive to tornado formation, with those tornadoes having a potential for wide destructive paths and long travel distances on the ground. Anyone paying attention yesterday, was put on alert by one of the world’s best severe storm forecasting agencies.

Turns out that JayCutlerWrld didn't know what the fuck he was talking about and was just making shit up, especially the part about "worse than Joplin".

This is why counting on random yahoos on social media for accurate information is a bad idea. Especially someone who posts pictures without attribution as if they were his own and then talks about how he's "winning". He's the Trump of weather.
