Aviation Enthusiasts; (2 of 2) Fascinating and artful airline air route maps from the old days;

https://www.askthepilot.com/connect-the-dots/

Some of the artwork is beautiful. These are from a book about the stylish route maps produced by the airlines, such as this one of the BOAC Eastern Route maps;

Or this one from Air France ca: 1959;

Delta Airlines, 1960;

Link to the book sales page on Amazon is in the first link above.

A Google image search turns up many more;

Braniff;

Frontier Airlines;

Western Airlines;

B.O.A.C (Precursor to British Airways) World map;

Aloha Airlines;

(Note: I have absolutely ZERO financial interest in this book, it’s authors or their publishers. I did not put this up as a means to promote sales, instead as merely interesting historical aviation artifacts.)

I will never forget the first time I remember flying overseas, and looking through the in-flight magazine to find that map in the very back.

TWA, JFK to ROME, 1965.

I should say that wasn't the first time I flew, it was just the first time I remembered. My dad was stationed in Saipan in 60' & 61, and if I think back, my very first memories are on that Island, but for the life of me I can not remember the journey home.

Old airline memorabilia is something I find fascinating as well.

Yup. Lots of old names. Ever seen a "PBA" DC-3? These guys used to come down to Miami and operate these aircraft during the winter, when their traffic from Boston out to the cape dropped off.

Lots of old airlines I remember, like Piedmont, Air Florida...hell, the list goes on and on.

Agent told traveler to call TWA because they flew “right and left”. Braniff only flew “up and down”.

Interesting side note on Braniff: Are you aware that for a very short time, Braniff operated the Concorde for a domestic flight leg? Interesting story;

(Note: As the article indicates, it was never repainted as the rendering above suggests. They just used US Based crews to fly from Dulles to Dallas.
