Why Florida is not a hot spot or epicenter despite later shut down order...

The state has tested 0.81% of the population. My county has tested 0.39% of the population. Yet I'm hearing from friends in healthcare throughout the state that some urban hospitals are already fearing next week will begin to look like NYC.

But they shouldn't worry. I mean only 0.086% of the population has tested positive. There can't be too many more people out there with it, right?

Please tell me the sarcasm smilie is unnecessary.

I'm sure they'll all come out as gleaming saviors while those swamp monster democrats will have been vanquished.

Makes me think of the little history I remember from the Bolsheviks and the Chinese communists. Perhaps similar to the rewriting of history during the revolutions in France, Europe, Rome, Greece... OK, now I get the picture.

Hope the way-back-machines keep their archives safe for at least 1,000 years.

We have 68 reported cases in our small county (pop 110,000). It's tripled in about a week. With the dearth of testing and given the age of our residents, I figure it's gotta be 3x that at least.

On a local FB group, someone posted that they drove down from Atlanta yesterday. Atlanta looked like a ghost town. On a Friday.

Light traffic all down the interstate. Picked up in central FL and here just west of Orlando they said it looked almost like a regular Friday

This local FB group is FILLED with self-centered right wingers and fake christians. Many work for themselves or have small businesses and feel entitled to do whatever they want

boats filled with people. Max occupancy, unchanged from before, is 10 per boat. A couple were families, but the rest were young people in probably their 20s, just out having fun with friends.

Risks are not high for that age range, but given the increasingly steep rise starting in the 30s it's likely they are forced by older people in their lives to socially distance around them. It'd be very interesting to know how many live with family they can bring it home to and how many alone or with others of their age and invulnerable disposition.

EVen the urban areas are not densely populated, there's lots of empty land and housing is cheap so there aren't that many apts. Most apts. are filled with young people, fewer old people live in them here than most other places with large populations. Of course there are a lot of senior centers with more density and that's where the volume has been so far. Under reporting could also be rampant in those places.

Sun Apr 12, 2020, 07:59 PM
Apr 2020

I've lived here in South Florida for over 34 years now, but here are some stats from Wikipedia:

"Miami, officially the City of Miami, is the seat of Miami-Dade County, and the cultural, economic and financial center of South Florida in the United States. The city covers an area of about 56 square miles (150 km2) between the Everglades to the west and Biscayne Bay to the east. Miami is the sixth most densely populated major city in the United States with an estimated 2018 population of 470,914. The Miami metropolitan area is home to 6.1 million people, the second-most populous in the southeastern United States and the seventh-largest in the nation.[8][9] The city has the third tallest skyline in the U.S. with over 300 high-rises,[10] 55 of which exceed 490 ft (149 m).[11]

Miami is a major center and leader in finance, commerce, culture, arts, and international trade.[12][13] The metro area is by far the largest urban economy in Florida and the 12th largest in the United States, with a GDP of $344.9 billion as of 2017.[14] In 2018, Miami was classified as an Alpha level global city by the GaWC.[15] In 2019, Miami ranked seventh in the United States and 31st among global cities in terms of business activity, human capital, information exchange, cultural experience, and political engagement.[16] According to a 2018 UBS study of 77 world cities, the city was ranked as the third-richest in the United States and the eighth-richest in the world in terms of purchasing power."

Link to Wikipedia article.

And here's what's probably thrown you off about Miami:

"In terms of land area, Miami is one of the smallest major cities in the United States. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the city encompasses a total area of 56.06 sq mi (145.2 km2), of which 35.99 sq mi (93.2 km2) is land and 20.08 sq mi (52.0 km2) is water. That means Miami comprises over 470,000 people in about 36 square miles (93 km2), making it one of the most densely populated cities in the United States, along with New York City, San Francisco, Boston, Chicago, and Philadelphia.[34]"

I've been in all those cities and they all seem so much bigger than Miami, but it's been a little over 10 years. So then the question is why are FL #'s so low, especially when we have so many nursing homes? Read that Mini-me is hiding 14,000 tests in state health dept. which they are refusing to process to keep the #'s artificially low.

How many have not been tested in other states that have the symptoms, but have chosen to stay home and get through it. In Missouri it is quite difficult to get tested. Is it this way in other states?

I saw one woman get taken to the hospital. All the emergency people were wearing masks and obviously, gloves. No special suits like Tyvex.

I did't see what happened in the second case, but I got the conclusion that the ambulance was still at the call, I did other things and didn't watch for the ambulance to pass my home.

It is highly unusual for one ambulance every two months to come near where I live.

But the US is only doing testing for cause. Because you are symptomatic or have other well-known possible exposure.

Without general population testing we're operating in a staged environment. Politicians will play these numbers all ways.
