The newfound popularity of America's governors shows what Trump doesn't get

The newfound popularity of America’s governors shows what Trump doesn’t get

But the real story is in which governors are winning the support of their constituents. It’s not the governors who echoed Trump’s dismissive attitude toward the pandemic for as long as they could. The governors getting the highest marks are the ones who have been most aggressive in ordering closures and communicating to their states that this is an era-defining crisis that requires sacrifice from all of us.

That includes both Republicans and Democrats — but the Republicans are the ones who have been notable for going where the president wouldn’t. Mike DeWine in Ohio, for instance, got criticismfrom many, including Republicans, for shutting down the state’s primary election and issuing an early shelter-in-place order. He now enjoys an approval of more than 80 percent.

Other governors who have become hugely popular include Larry Hogan in Maryland (also a Republican), Gavin Newsom in California (whose approval shot up by more than 40 points), and Andrew M. Cuomo in New York, all of whom have taken strong steps to enforce social distancing and have made forceful public appearances telling their constituents how serious the crisis is.

One governor who hasn’t experienced that kind of bump? Trump loyalist Ron DeSantis in Florida.

In one poll DeSantis’s approval came in at 51 percent, which would be pretty good in ordinary times but actually represents a decline from what he got in some polls from before the pandemic. DeSantis delayed issuing a lockdown order until after many other states had already done so, earning widespread criticism.

I watch the daily news conferences of Rockford IL Mayor McNamara, held with the head of the health department there and the president of their county board. They are wonderful and professional. Also, they are politically mixed. There is no partisanship, only a desire to inform and help.

After four years of Rauner acting a goddamn fool and stamping his feet and doing absolutely nothing, Pritzker is a breath of fresh air. A nice hit from a legal joint, too, but a breath of fresh air on this shit.

I have been watching her on the news. She has had a great deal to say about the high percentage of black citizens who are dying from this. I wish her the best. I love Chicago and it hurts to see them hurting.

Stay safe.

chumpy isn't good for anything except bullshit and self aggrandizement.

The polls aren't surprising at all.

He jumped on this early, has been aggressive about making sure people are safe, and has been running a near constant war with Trump and coming out ahead.

His approval is at 75%, but might be higher if he was giving daily briefings. His personality is quiet and laid back, so he lets his health secretary give daily updates and stays in the background only speaking when he has something important to say. He's also rightly taken criticism for the state unemployment system not being prepared when he ordered all non-life-sustaining businesses to close.

Peduto in Pittsburgh had been good, too, closing up the city proper early on.

15. Mini-me is nothing but a drumpf fluffer and so is utterly disguting.

Actually he's far better on climate than drumpf, but on this, it's lock step with Hair Furor. When asked about the state of FL reopening, he said "he'd follow the presidents lead and open when told to". People are pissed that he didn't close any beaches until after they were teeming with young people during spring break. We are very lucky to only be #10 now, we were #5 at times last week. They do have some testing, don't have to have a fever, just respiratory issues, so that's really good, but it just takes 250 a day and sends everyone else home. Why will CDC only do 250 a day, other than drumpfs pathological issues with testing because of him being part owner in the only co. auth. by CDC to test in every state until the Abbott tests were approved because neither is capable of the volume needed and he refuses to let us use other companies than them.
