On the day of Linda Tripp's death, let's remember and honor Julie Hiatt Steele.

She risked everything, and lost a lot, because she wouldn't acquiesce to Ken Starr's demand that she perjure herself.

Ken Starr, and his operation, was in many ways the beginning of the modern fascist movement in America. Those who stood up to him, and refused to commit the crimes he was demanding they commit, are American heroes.

Last year she died in anonymity, with media ignoring her contribution and not acknowledging her passing. She didn't fit in with the media narrative about the Clinton years or the 90s so they erased her.

But we are still living in a democracy today, however endangered, because of great Americans like Julie Hiatt Steele.

I will never forget that.

4. Imagine if she was in that position today.

In an era of doxing. In an era with widespread internet usage, where the rabid right gets each other going. In an era where Fox News will seek to destroy their enemies, and tens of millions of people believe their lies.

The danger she would have faced would have been many times worse that what Dr. James Tiller faced, a danger that ultimately killed him.

It is such a scary time in our country's history. We are just lucky that it isn't even worse, in terms of our ability to distinguish right from wrong, or truth from fiction. It was great American heroes like Julie Hiatt Steele who prevented the crisis from evolving even faster than it has already evolved.

If we survive as a nation it will be because of people like her.
