Coronavirus stimulus triggers fight over paid leave

The Trump administration and Democrats remain at odds over who should qualify for paid leave amid the coronavirus pandemic with the administration issuing guidance this week that gives companies broad authority to determine which employees get the benefits.

Under the Families First Coronavirus Response Act, known as “phase three” of the recent stimulus package, organizations with more than 500 workers are already exempt from the paid leave mandates. That leaves up to 61 million workers who could be eligible, according to the Labor Department.

However, the vast majority of those businesses can apply for an exemption because they have fewer than 50 people, according to Census Bureau data.

Moreover, some Democrats remain concerned that this could shortchange employees even if their company isn’t categorically exempted from the new paid leave requirements.

Isn't shortchanging employees a tried and true American business value, overall? We must assure that profits are maximized and that the portfolios of the wealthy grow so obese and bloated that they need to be deliberated from time to time.

Employees? They are easily replaced "human resources" and not what this country is about. Who didn't get the memo? Profits are and will remain the number one priority in the USA. It's #1, and there are even destitute people out there with enough self-loathing to be sure to vote for it every chance they get.

Neo-liberal values mean that if there is no profit in preparing for a crisis like this, then there will be no investment in the mitigation of national disasters or preparation for them. That's how you run the US government like a sound business and we are seeing that in real time without even a good cover story for it.

El Presidente should be on a warpath of inducing deep anxiety and fear in the near future in order to exploit the possibilities for his regime.
