The United States recorded nearly 1,500 deaths from the coronavirus in the past 24 hours, the worst 24-hour death toll globally since the pandemic began.
According to figures from Johns Hopkins University, 1,480 deaths were counted between Thursday morning and Friday morning, and the total number of people who have died since the start of the pandemic in the US is now 7,406.
It tops the record set by the US on the previous day with 1,169 deaths. The US also far has more cases than any other country in the world with more than 275,000, at least double that of Italy which has the second highest number.
It comes as Donald Trump advised all Americans to wear masks in public to protect against the virus over fears that the illness that has infected more than one million people worldwide may be spreading by normal breathing.

(63,221 posts)Does anyone know what this compares to, if anything? What is our normal death rate per day? During flu season?

(31,261 posts)So the daily average for flu is higher.
The key item is that flu is a known. The SAR-COV-19 virus has a ton of unknowns, so scientists don't know where it will end. Likely by Friday, it will be as bad as a mild flu season. My guess, barring luck, within three weeks it is worse than a severe flu season.

(63,221 posts)A flu season lasts at least 3 months, sometimes longer, so that is roughly 135,000 or more from this virus alone. Much more than a flu season. And that is if it doesn't get worse.
It will of course, get worse. I am not totally disagreeing with you, just with the claim that the daily average for the flu being higher.

(31,261 posts)I was looking at totals so far, the daily average is lower than a flu season average.
You are looking at the rolling average, and in that sense, you are totally right, SC-19 is worse and likely will get a lot worse (I arrived at that point at the end of my post).
