(11,949 posts)Everyone received full pay for 5 weeks after the parks closed and those that are furloughed will receive full medical bennies with Disney picking up the employee co-pay. With the option of using benefit time to help cover the period before reopening or the crazy time necessary to navigate the Florida Unemployment system which was designed by republicans to not work.
Those Cast Members still working are being forced to follow rigorous safety and distancing protocols.
Even a company as rich as Disney can not afford to pay over 100,000 people indefinitely when there is no revenue coming in.
I agree they are concerned about liability and image. What company is not. But a company can multitask.

(36,745 posts)It started in January 1918 with a large outbreak, then subsided in summer. The second wave in October 1918 is when all hell broke loose into 1919. Then there were lesser waves until December 1920.

(100,080 posts)We have the technology in place to be able to fight this thing when / if a second wave happens and we should have drugs and vaccine trials beginning. That will ensure that what happened in 1918 doesn't happen today. Of course that's assuming that the whole world works together and pulls our resources to be able to fight this thing.

They are not going to open anytime soon.

(6,395 posts)...previous one, he was hopping we would start opening our main offices in early May. Now he said, its going to be awhile and it will have to be phased in. So now I'm thinking it might be late May or early June.
With the Disney parks....think Shanghai and Hong Kong first. Tokyo following after that, then Paris. After that, Anaheim with Orlando being last.
Ironically, I had been trying to change careers a bit. I had been submitting Resume's to Princess/Carnival Cruises, Royal Caribbean, and Disney. I got a couple of interviews with Princess, but think my price was to high.
Disney I couldn't even get the time of day, I heard they pay low (insurance companies are known to pay a bit higher), but was willing to take a cut if needed (I'm at a point where I'm probably only going to work professionally for maybe 8 more years and want to have some fun). But heard through the grapevine that you need to know someone there. Wonder if that will change, after their salaried employee's getting furloughed, have to think many will want something more solid (heh...like insurance, were still going full speed ahead...from home).

(11,949 posts)The teams maintaining the facilities are still working. Trees are being pruned as needed as is the landscape in general. Attractions continue to be tested and the facilities are being maintained. Perishable food has been donated to food banks and other stuff is frozen.
Cast members who will be furloughed(most are still being paid now) will still get their health bennies with Disney covering the employee copay.
Unless this stretched til August the parks will be able to open in a week or 2.

(53,342 posts)My wife and I were discussing a sort of phased reopen. Just FL residents only since so many other states and intl visitors would be coming from places with no StayAtHome policies
I wouldnt expect FL open before August

(12,712 posts)It is going to take a while for this one to pass and we may even see reoccurring waves into next year, due to various factors.
A lot depends on how much liability entertainment companies want to risk in relation to their profits.
