General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsThe Trump presidency must and will die from this virus.
Unfortunately, many innocent people will die for this to happen. It was inevitable, when 60 million people lose their minds and do something so foolish, like electing a con man, reality TV host to be president, the ending would be catastrophic.
When the Trump presidency dies and fades off into history, all of here will have a job to do. When the Democrats take back the Whitehouse and hopefully the Senate, we must all contact our representatives, Senators, Whitehouse, and tell them we want Justice for what trump has done to our country. No matter the cost , no matter how long it takes.

(17,549 posts)Is going to die any time soon. The same folks who voted him in will do it again. Here is a guy who should have a current approval rating in the teens and nearly as many people approve of him as disapprove. Those approvers think he is just doing a swell job.
If a million Americans die, the red hat bunch will consider Trump a great and effective leader because two million didn't die. If we are in a recession at the time of the elections, they will be praising him for us not being in a depression. If we have 20% unemployment in October, they will be talking about the greatest gains in employment in the history of the nation.
The political virus is every bit as dangerous as the medical one, maybe more so, because it infects 100% of us.

(25,471 posts)His approval rating among Rs is still 90% and he's still pretty solid in right-leaning Is.
His base hasn't gone anywhere. That's who is propping up his overall rating. We underestimate it at our peril.

(65,061 posts)...aggregated -4.1%. In the middle of a national emergency, that's rotten. At the same point into their first term (1172 days) the last 10 presidents had higher approval and either net positive or a negative # closer to zero.
10 out of 10.
I agree about the Rs, of whom a lot are now cult members. I don't agree that right leaning Rs are as forgiving.
The numbers & circumstances don't line up with that conclusion.

TwilightZone
(25,471 posts)Sure, they do. His approval ratings are among the highest they've been his entire presidency. The 90% of Rs is a given and pretty stable. The only other significant component is right-leaning independents. If his overall approval is up, his approval with them certainly isn't down. Because math.

(65,061 posts)This week, polls show he's about the same as his whole term after falling from the bounce.
His poll numbers, under these circumstances, should be way higher, not more of the same.
You seem like you forgot 43 being at 90% after 9/11, then continuously falling for 6+ of the next 7 years.
Same with Carter when the Iran thing first happened.
The bounce effect is real, so the modest bounce that lasted a week, is not a sign of strength.
TwilightZone
(25,471 posts)A = B + C
A = Trump's approval rating
B = Trump's approval rating among Republicans
C = Trump's approval rating among right-leaning Independents
B is static.
C can't be down if A is up, because B doesn't ever change.
Are you seriously having difficulty with this?
The assertion that he's lost a bunch of right-leaning independents is simply false.

(17,549 posts)A lot of how much you think that Trump has gained or lost can depend on your point of perspective. If you only take the political temperature of the folks on this forum, you would believe that Trump wouldn't stand an ice cube's chance in hell.
We know that thinking people recognize how bad Trump bungled this thing and how costly his mistakes will be, but, I will remind you, that it was not the thinking people who elected the dolt. He was elected by emotion, a backlash against liberals in general and a black president in particular. (and I believe that the black part was the main source of the hate) These people have not changed, not one iota; they hate you and everything you stand for, and you better not forget it.
If the election is close, there is nothing to lead me to believe that Trump will not use the power of the Presidency to rig the results, so a slim victory won't work. Who is there to stop him? Justice dept? The Courts? Of course, if the Bernie folks stay out pouting, we will not win by any margin, so that will be a moot point.
Trump's chances are no worse than 50/50 today. When he is able to proclaim a great victory over the pandemic, he will be tough to beat. And that is why we need to invest our emotional energy, and our money in fighting Trump, it may be our last chance.

(14,855 posts)Even if Clinton had won in 2008, the fact that polls showed a close contest against that narcissistic idiot for months prior to the election was extremely depressing to me.
The electoral college results made it far worse, of course.
Turning on my car radio, and hearing nonsense from the likes of Bill Cunningham (WLW) for a few seconds, slowly chips away my faith in this country.

(9,734 posts)so let him catch this devil virus. I dont think hed survive. Election...well under this scenario...no trump.
But... and I hate this... we must be prepared if he wins. They are still trying to pack the courts with friendly judges. The election may come down to being decided in some manner by the courts.
These are unprecedented times with an unprecedented president that has unusual troublesome ideas. Letting down our guard now would be like...hell I dont know...something really destructively stupid...like putting Jared in charge of this pandemic.

(18,663 posts)that the posts of how the coming election is a done deal, that there is absolutely no way he can win, are greater at suppressing the vote than any overt actions we have seen.
Leading into the 2016 election I recall all of the posts about how we were going to see the greatest landslide in history, talk of winning the Whitehouse and getting super-majorities in both houses of Congress and so on. It was seriously proposed that he would drop out the day before the election to avoid the shame of the coming defeat.
How many chose to not vote because it was "in the bag?" There was no landslide but an election so close in key areas that a shift of a razor thin margin was enough to changed the "guaranteed" victory into a loss.
In 2016 those who questioned the predictions of guaranteed victory, instead pointing out the early signs that the election would need every Democratic voter to turn out were shouted down and/or ridiculed. I am working towards the next election. Part of that is pointing out that we have seen these sorts of overconfident posts before and if people listen to them again, no one should complain if the result is the same.

(7,412 posts)Blue areas in all states (the major cities), will be the hardest hit by this. Those reliable Democratic voters may be displaced, not be able to vote in person, not receive their mail in ballots, etc while the red Trump areas are mostly unaffected by the virus and vote at normal levels. This whole thing could really help Trump defeat Biden in the EC.
