(CNN)Just eight US governors have decided against issuing statewide directives urging their residents to stay at home as the outbreak of the coronavirus escalates and spreads across the country, the last holdouts in the nation.
The governors, all of whom are Republican, have offered a variety of explanations for why they have not followed the lead of their colleagues from coast-to-coast -- along with countries across the world -- by ordering people to restrict their movement in hopes of slowing the pandemic.
In doing so, they've collectively ignored the stay-at-home pleas of Dr. Anthony Fauci, the nation's top infectious disease expert, who said in a CNN interview: "If you look at what's going on in this country, I just don't understand why we're not doing that."
Absent a nationwide order, which President Donald Trump once again on Friday declined to give, a patchwork of rules has emerged in all corners of the country that offer conflicting guidance for how citizens should protect themselves and their families from coronavirus.

(25,111 posts)territories have some sort of "lock-down in place this morning?
Plus Wyoming is feeling the jilt from FEMA, now he/she knows how Blue states feel.

(1,850 posts)And within these states, certain cities have mandatory stay at home issued by their Mayor.
But those 8 governor's refuse to issue a statewide order.
The worst governors in the worst states. IMO (apologies to those living there.)

(21,596 posts)I say this as a native Southerner and resident of an adjacent state.
Note: I love South Carolina and I know there are so many great Democrats who live there.
Be strong, take care, wash your hands and Vote for all of our Democratic candidates!

(1,688 posts)When you have the poorest excuse for a leader weve ever seen, its not surprising unfortunately to see him NOT do the right thing and come up with convoluted reasons for a bonehead move. Dr Fauci said the day before that he didnt see why the states that havent issued a stay at home directive had not done so.
My guess is that Trump was not gonna ever let anyone tell him what to do, so he kicked Fauci off the program for that day and came up the bullshit that it was up to the individual governors.

(3,496 posts)Are people in these states just staying home on their own accord? I can see a lot of people (who can afford to) just self isolating on their own. They'll see the folly of their way in about three weeks (unfortunately).

(15,820 posts)Wyoming is doing phenomenally well. Best state in the country with regards to the virus. Kinda nice to live a mile from closest neighbor I guess.

(1,850 posts)I'm a numbers person. Back in 2016 I made a few lists relating to election results.
My questions were "who are these people; how did folks vote in each State; which states should I avoid like the plague?" Seriously I wrote that question in 2016. So...
One list noted the worst states (where 45 won by 60%+), the very bad (where he won with 50-59%) and the bad/misguided/unlucky states (where he won with less than 50%).
I also have a list of the best, very good, and good/lucky states, but we're talking about the bad states here.
Anyway, here are some numbers about the holdout states, with rounded numbers.
The worst:
Arkansas 61% vs 34%
N. Dakota. 63% vs 27%
S. Dakota. 62% vs 32%
Wyoming. 67% vs 22%
The very bad:
Iowa. 51%vs 42%
S. Carolina 55% vs 41%
Nebraska. 59% vs 34%
The misguided/unlucky:
Utah. 46% vs 27%
Also, as an FYI. Several days ago there were 14 holdouts. The additional 6 are:
Alabama. 62% vs 34% issued 4/3 effective 4/4
Georgia 51% vs 46%. Order issued 4/1 effective 4/3
Oklahoma 65% vs 29%
Missouri. 57% vs 38%. Order issued 4/3, in effect 4/6
Texas 52% vs 43%
Florida 49% vs 48%. Order issued 4/2 effective 4/3
About Texas and Oklahoma, their governor's have not issued statewide orders, or are claiming they are not telling people what to do! My cousin in Dallas has been isolating for weeks, based on mayor's order.
So, these 14 states for the most part voted overwhelming for 45, and their Republican governor's too.
Dare I say they're idiots, to begin with.
I won't say they deserve what they get.
But because they're idiots they don't understand that they are extending the isolation period for everyone by not joining it early enough. (Or they are SO loyal to 45 that they assume they will get help from him when they need it. Or so religious they are protected?!)
Ok, that's my rant and synopsis on the worst, very bad, and bad/misguided/unlucky states. I have no basis for prediction, but let's say within a week of Easter some if not all will change their position and order lockdowns, because of the spike after the holiday.
And my sincere apologies and condolences to any of you who live in any of these "bad" states. Stay home and stay safe!
