Passengers from coronavirus-hit cruise ships allowed to disembark in Florida

Those from the Zaandam and Rotterdam who were screened and showed no symptoms were bussed directly to the airport

Fri 3 Apr 2020 15.38 EDT

Passengers from an ill-fated cruise were carefully freed from their cabins and allowed to touch dry land on Friday for the first time in weeks, following the removal of 14 critically ill people who were wheeled off to Florida hospitals bracing for an influx of coronavirus patients.

The exodus from the Zaandam and its sister ship the Rotterdam could extend into Saturday, officials said. Floridians disembarked first, followed by other passengers.

Buses were taking passengers who were showing no symptoms after being screened and cleared by third-party paramedics directly to the airport, escorted by deputies on motorcycles.

Broward Health officials said 10 patients were taken to its hospital. Three others were taken to another local hospital.

Before disembarking, passengers received instructions to wear face masks at all times when traveling and immediately start 14 days of self-quarantine when they arrived home.

Really don’t believe that they should have been allowed to dock and I was heavily criticized in an earlier thread on the subject this week. Supplies and assistance should have been provided but just taking everyone off and sending them home seems pretty damn dumb to me and once docked you knew that would be the case.

Releasing passengers without testing is the final debacle in this shitshow. Haven’t they heard that asymptomatic people can be contagious as hell? That’s been common knowledge for weeks.

This is EXACTLY what one would do it they were intentionally trying to spread the virus.

like cruise ship passengers were on the west coast? I have no problem with letting them dock - that's a mercy that needed to happen somewhere. This letting them disperse to spread the virus (and they will) is stupid.

They like their numbers. They shouldn't have to increase their numbers for something that wasn't their fault.

Those coming to Ohio (pretty sure there is at least one) are required to self-quarantine.

I thought they were expected to take charter flights home - but from my friend's posts it sounds like they could do whatever they wanted. Flights were arranged - but really inconvenient ones (e.g. 12 hours for a 2.5 hour flight). They were not obligated to take those flights. So from a floating sardine can to a flying one. Probably quite a few new cases from that stupidity.

It is not clear how the planes were handled - she said there were no empty seats on the plane - but it isn't clear whether this was a charter plane since she said she paid for a first class ticket to avoid paying baggage fees for her large suitcases . . . It would seem odd that she could buy a first class ticket (or would have to pay baggage fees) if she was on a plane that was chartered by Holland America.
