(2,654 posts)The mercantile aspect of gun proliferation is the NRA's achilles heel.
Right to manufacture and sell? Sorry, don't think so!

(22,133 posts)order have not included gun shops as 'essential'. Perhaps maybe the 200 million or so guns already in existence should be enough for now? Somehow, I think they'll (the NRA) disagree. Ridiculous.
IMHO, a national health emergency has nothing to do w/ guns now, unless there are some gun nuts planning on using their guns to defend against sick CV victims, who I think for the most part, will be in bed or under quarantine.
Perhaps someone else in DU land can provide us w/ their (the NRA) logic here, in putting others at risk, for basically a non-essential business (it does not provide food, air, water, medicines, med. equipment, etc., if anything guns cause more medical supplies (the use of by criminal elements) to be used).
Maybe there might be some fear out there, in protecting one's processions, but I don't think people are really too terribly interested in getting out among other people, or handling other's processions, being that the processions could be contaminated possibly (would you grab a bunch of stuff out of the alley or somewhere?).
In addition, people are supposed to be maintaining a minimum of six feet from others (or more even), so what's the issue?

This is a low-end estimate, as it does not include firearms that were produced before the time span studied, although it also does not account for any weapons that may have been removed from circulation post-production.
Tens of millions (hundreds?) are owned by absolutely insane berks too!

(22,133 posts)figure might, just might be somewhat in the ballpark. Boy, was I wrong! 423 million guns (and probably more), yikes. Overkill indeed.
Now don't get me wrong, I came from a family that my dad loved collecting guns (over 40 guns, and hunting, until hunters that he allowed on our property abused it, no more) and even have a nephew that sells guns in rural MO. But it has to be responsible gun ownership, in a gun safe and locked. I and a sibling, are very aware of the perils of a unsecured gun, even a gun that shoots blanks only, they're dangerous too.
I do believe that they do provide a measure of protection (at least in one's mind), especially when you live in a rural part of America, and it could take an hour for police to arrive if you need the authorities. I also have to be honest here too, in that we have a small hand pistol too, in STLMO that we've brought out, for protection during times such as this (we have no small children around).
In the southern part of the Ozarks, we have interrupted a burglar at a friend's house, they escaped quickly before the police arrived, we think they were kids, scared just as much as we were, and the other time, in the Ozarks again (figures), like in the series, two neighborhood drunks got mad and threatened our former next door neighbor for a bush hogging bill. The neighbor, who was with his small children, was aggressively threatened by the two neighborhood drunks, one of whom got shot and killed, by the neighbor in self defense, and the other drunk fled (got caught later, put in jail). Sad of course, but the neighborhood was in a way glad that the drunks were dealt w/, being that they were a terror to all of us.

I doubt these silly lawsuits will go anywhere.

(19,253 posts)The addition of firearms-industry workers over the weekend to a federal list of essential workforces such as doctors, police officers and energy workers, came after gun-industry groups lobbied the Department of Homeland Security and the White House.
In an extended court battle, the NRA could very well win. However, such a court battle will take months or even years with appeals.

(45,806 posts)site, that couldn't be true! Well, dam, dam, dam! WHY would anyone think those stores are critical? For WHAT?? I'm not a gun nut, but my husband is c lose to that. He's got a # of collector guns, some he uses for hunting, and some just because he wanted them, but even HE was very surprised when I told him about the gun shops being declared essential. All I can imagine is the NRA has their tentacles into the Feds at all levels.

(63,221 posts)This is NOT an essential business! I am so fucking tired of these whiny little gun humpers I could scream. They are the biggest snowflakes in the world. God forbid they should be prevented from amassing an arsenal of weapons for god knows what.
What are they all so afraid of? Do they think they can shoot the virus away? They each have two hands. How many guns to they think they can operate at one time?
What is this insane obsession about? I will never understand the mentality of these people. They are sick. I am just glad I live in a place where there are strict gun laws and very few gun fanatics.
