Homemade face masks and coronavirus: New CDC policy and everything you should know

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has reversed its recommendation on wearing face masks -- including cloth face coverings sewn at home -- to say that people should wear coverings in public, as well as taking measures like social distancing.

The White House on Friday announced the new guidelines, based on the CDC's evaluation. It recommends that everyone wear a face covering that's made of basic cloth or fabric that can be washed and reused. The CDC says not to seek out medical or surgical-grade masks and to leave N95 masks to health care workers.

The CDC stressed that its new guidelines should be followed along with earlier precautions, like self-quarantine at home, frequently and thoroughly washing your hands and practicing appropriate social distancing. Previously, the agency considered homemade face masks to be used as a last resort in hospitals and medical facilities.

Before Friday's nationwide recommendation, New York City and Los Angeles already advocated the use of face coverings in public. "We're advising New Yorkers to wear a face covering when you go outside and will be near other people," New York Mayor Bill de Blasio said in a public address earlier this week.

Cloth is WORTHLESS. 75 years ago when cloth was standard the mask were sterilized and changed every time they got wet. The mask are neither sterile and will be worn full of snot, spit and yes - virus if you have it. And I will be damned if I do it just to please some idiot. BTW didn't say I would be going out - Being high risk I've been at home since 2-14 and since most of my family works in healthcare or necessary businesses, the virus WILL eventually come home to me. So don't worry about me infecting people, I plan to die at home.
I bet you guys think duck and cover will save you from a nuke too.

9. So with 40 years of OR experience, you can't fashion a mask that will diminish the chance

that you will spread or catch the virus? If that is true, that is alarming. Maybe everything I have read and heard is wrong. I'm not going to pretend to be an expert. This is way out of my area of expertise. From what I have been trying to learn, homemade masks are nowhere near as effective as a properly used N95 mask, but they can lower the chance of one spreading and catching the virus if it is used properly. Are you saying they are completely useless and will do no good even if people use good filter material and use the mask properly? I agree that Trump is a fucking idiot and I won't do something just because he says to, but a lot of people who seem to know what they are talking about say it is a good idea.

KFOR reached out to the nurse’s employer and Chief Executive Nurse at Integris Health Kerris Bayer sent the following statement:
“All caregivers have been provided appropriate PPE to take care of their patients safely based on their care setting. At this time, we have not supported utilization of PPE that is not medical grade unless it has been approved and deemed safe by the Integris System Incident Command. We understand there is concern and real fear surrounding COVID-19, therefore our clinical and infection prevention teams are actively discussing a solution to expand PPE usage for our caregivers.
We are providing PPE to our caregivers that provides evidence-based protection while they provide care. At this time, we have not supported utilization of PPE that is not medical grade unless it has been approved and deemed safe by the Integris System Incident Command.
Our priority, ways is the safety of our patients and caregivers. This stands true in the face of pandemic more than ever.
The masks being provided to patients and their families are the hand-sewn masks donated front he community. These are not medical grade and therefore not approved for us by our caregivers.”
When asked for clarification, the hospital reportedly said that nurses can use their own masks if they are medical grade, approved and used appropriately.

My wife is a retired banker. In better days wearing a mask into a bank was the best way to make sure your photo was taken and the FBI alerted.

Thanks though!
