The guillotine was supposed to be the fastest, most painless form of execution- a great improvement on hanging, drawing and quartering, etc.
Dr. Joseph-Ignace Guillotin, himself opposed to capital punishment, believed he was providing a humane, faster, and less painful death for condemned criminals.
