Trump throws up 'outrageous' roadblock for seniors, people

with disabilities in need of $1,200 relief checks

Published 5 hours ago on April 1, 2020
By Jake Johnson, Common Dreams

“The Trump administration is throwing up an unnecessary barrier that will make it harder for seniors, people with disabilities, and veterans to get the payments they desperately need.”

As millions of Americans await the $1,200 cash payments authorized by the latest coronavirus stimulus package, experts and progressive advocates are condemning a move by the Trump administration which would force millions of seniors, veterans, and people with disabilities to jump through unnecessary hoops to receive money they are entitled to under law.

The Internal Revenue Service issued guidance earlier this week announcing that people who do not typically file a tax return—a group that includes millions of Social Security recipients and low-income Americans—”will need to file a simple tax return to receive an economic impact payment.”

“Requiring seniors and people with disabilities who receive Form SSA-1099 (the annual Social Security benefit statement) to file a tax return is unnecessary. The federal government already has all of the information it needs.”
—Chuck Marr, Center on Budget and Policy Priorities

“This is outrageous,” Nancy Altman, president of advocacy group Social Security Works, said in a statement on the policy Wednesday. “The $1200 payments could easily be added automatically to the benefits these people already receive every month.”

from what I've read.

Guessing that means it will be available hours before some arbitrary deadline so that the system crashes. Oh, too bad for you.

My son is disabled and does not fill out a tax form. But he also has strict limits on assets. Many disabled people are limited to under $2,000 in total liquid assets.

if the Trump Administration wins on this. A lot of elderly people will have to seek out help to file.

I wonder? Haven't seen any sign of it yet. We bend over and take it without any lube, just some vague promise of a meager dinner at some future time, if we follow the draconian rules.

At some point, this will reflect much worse upon ourselves than it does on our overlords. At some point, inaction is acquiescence. Just some food for thought.

I am staying at my bfs house because my housemates both work at Walmart in the grocery. I cannot even drive the 2 hours one way to get it and come back because I would put my bf and his roommate in jeopardy if I came back and frankly they wouldn't let me come back.

I waffle between believing they’re all utter fools (which of course they are) to wondering if this is deliberate to hurt American people because Trump thinks he will not be re-elected and like any spoiled two-year-old chooses to destroy his toy rather than share it.

Trump has done nothing that other countries have done to bring the virus under control:
—test everyone because people can be carriers without symptoms
—we can’t test because we don’t have them—where are the millions Trump promised weeks ago
—shut the country down to reduce spread
—make sure everyone has masks, not just medical staff

If you know these things help, why on earth would you not do them? This makes no sense.

The seniors are already scared from the epidemic because they are at extreme risk. To add to their anxiety is simply inhumane.
