Nero golfed while Rome burned
With fever spreading like fire.
First a few, then more, then many.
Nero was told it was coming
But thought he was smarter
Than the scientists
And the doctors
And the generals.
And he wanted to save a few dollars
By firing the team that kept plagues
Outside the borders of Rome
Unable to admit mistakes
Nero said it was a hoax
That would go away
Like a miracle
And spent two months
Twiddling his golf balls
Ranting on his golden throne
Patting himself
And spreading rumors
From the unreliable source
Of miracle cures that killed.
And without a leader
Of sanity and competence
The powerful nation of Rome
Was brought to its knees
By the smallest enemy of all
Its citizens hiding
Its store shelves bare.
And now come the vultures
But also the heroes.
