Steve Mnuchin: Record-shattering jobless claims 'are not relevant in the short term'

Published 1 min ago on March 26, 2020
By Brad Reed

Trump Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin on Thursday appeared to downplay the seriousness of the record-shattering number of jobless claims filed over the last week.

During an interview on CNBC, Mnuchin was asked to comment on the latest jobless claims report showing that 3.3 million Americans had filed for unemployment in just the last week, and he responded that we need to look at the bigger picture of where the economy will be a month from now.

“To be honest, I think these numbers right now aren’t relevant, whether they’re bigger or smaller, in the short term,” he said.

Mnuchin then predicted that much of the economic damage being done right now would be mitigated by the $2 trillion stimulus bill passed by the Senate.

Things will pick up once the contagion passes on. He is foolish to think this will be in a month, mind, but so long as people are supported liberally through this time of plague, when as a matter of public health they must not work, it is true enough unemployment figures do not mean what they usually do.

checks get rolling to those who need it.

No more delays and Treasury and states need to handle distribution of funds expeditiously. Obviously, stopping spread of CV is another matter.

Every single day reminding people about it.

When in the Hell are people going to wake up to the fact that Republicans do not give a shit about them and are only using them as pawns that need their IRAs, 401Ks, Pension Funds, and SSA Trust Fund leveraged against, so the Republicans can remove the earnings from them?

It doesn't take much intelligence to realize it is a Republican Pump & Dump shakedown.

That Airline Union Rep that Lawrence O'Donnell had on last night should be one of the main 'decision makers' in the Federal Government from now on, because she obviously knows a hell of a lot more about what has really been going on in this country than any politician.
