(9,897 posts)I have a back log of books to catch up on and a wish list of readings that I will never complete in three lifetimes...my kids are constantly whining about being bored, but they don't dare tell me they are bored any more because as soon as they do, I confiscate their phone/tablet and hand them a book with the caveat that once they give me a book report on it, they can have their devices back...
The youngest only gets children's books, but the teens get novels now...so far 2 of them saw what happened and have avoided me like the Coronavirus itself!
EDIT - for those of you doing the heroic work of keeping shelves stocked and food and supplies available - THANK YOU!!! I can't tell you how grateful I am, nor how much importance there is in what you're doing...without the service you are providing, things would be exponentially worse everywhere we are in lock down...so THANK YOU ONCE AGAIN!!!

Amazon pantry has some food you would have to wait but it will get there, plus insta cart goes to Safeway and they sell king arthur where i bought it 2 weeks ago.

(18,402 posts)I had it on my Instacart delivery list, but shopper texted me that neither the King Arthur nor any suitable replacement (i.e., any kind of all-purpose flour) was available (I can always find it at the store she was shopping). A number of items I requested ended up with no suitable replacement (liquid hand soap, for example), so had to be refunded, but the shopper did a good job of replacing other items with acceptable substitutes.
I can get King Arthur flour at any of three or four different supermarkets in my area. But my spouse's one trip ten days or so ago to a very large, well-stocked supermarket walking distance from us had no King Arthur flour either.
Everyone must be baking, which is a good thing!

It's a reasonable way to send their workers home for their own safety. And an easy way to shut down their order system.
One of the needlework websites I follow sent out a notice. Apparently a lot of stitchers saved links from the past and are trying to order from those old links. The manager of the website does not want to take the entire site down, though she has changed the current pages to indicate she is not taking orders. (10,058 posts)buying and personal shoppers in the store that fill the orders, you drive up and they will bring it out and put it in your trunk for you, no need to even get out of the car. I have not used it yet because I like to pick out my own produce and if I don't like it won't buy it, but my son and daughter-in-law are using it. For the first time in our city in Canada, they were making us line up outside with 6 feet spacing and only letting so many in at a time. It has been 2 weeks since I went out to shop so not sure when this started but I get it. I am good for another 2 weeks on fresh or much longer if they do a lockdown. I also decided to fill up my car with gas. They do say that gas pumps are some of the most dangerous for having the virus on them so make sure you wear gloves. I wear the small wool gloves so I can throw them in the laundry when I come home but I also use a plastic bag on the pumps and debit pin pads. A roll of dog poop bags is good to keep in the car and just put them on your hands when handling any of these and then throw in the garbage. Some stores still deliver as well. I also noticed that the cashiers now all have plexiglass up in front of them so nobody can sneeze etc on them.

Instacart is a service that goes to the store and has a person buy the specified items for you and delivers them. The nearest grocery store to me has a delivery service that is fully booked for over 2 weeks now. However, I can get a delivery within a few hours to half a day via instacart. They even email or text you if they item is out of stock and if they can substitute item A for item B or C.
Yes, there is a delivery charge, but there should be coupons online for discounts.

(2,018 posts)We're going because of hoarding idiots.
I have been to the stores 3 times in 2 days trying to get some staples - eggs, oil, butter, KMR for the ailing foster kitten. Forget the flour. That's not happening. I've given up and will be baking from now on, rather than having to chase down the few loaves of bread that aren't being grabbed up in the first few hours in the AM.
I get it, you don't want people coming in more than normal. But for goodness sakes, please nudge the store you work for to crack down even harder on quantities people can buy. That'll keep more of us out of your hair, so we don't have to keep checking back. I have a HORRIBLE store in my rural town, where if I can get an item it'll often cost 3x what it'll cost in the big chain. But that's a 20 minute run in one direction. Nobody is really in the mood to do that over and over.

(10,885 posts)to just dash in and out. Store wasn't all that busy, but a few of the shoppers in there needed a reality check. Certainly by now everyone has heard of social distancing; it would be nice if they practiced it. Some are just oblivious. I can give some allowance to the slow movers amongst us, but those who are deliberately offensive need a whack to the head.
For example, there was a young couple, just being totally, deliberately obnoxious - standing in the middle of the aisle so you couldn't get by, squeezing in next to you at the freezer doors, standing at your shoulder in Produce, etc. They'd snicker if you tried to steer around them and keep a distance, and advance toward anyone backing away. Finally, I looked right in the eyes of the guy and said "Kindly back off and be polite to those around you". I won't repeat what he called me as I walked away, while he and his beauty had a laughfest.
It was my first time out in a week, and it seems the store is making a recovery. No TP or sanitizer (I looked just to check - don't need any.), but they had an adequate supply of meats and veggies. Fish and pasta were low, as was bacon and ice cream. Freezer items were available, but limited..
I'm all set now for the next 2 weeks or so.

(13,776 posts)Making fun of someone's health concerns is like making fun of their religion... even if the beliefs aren't shared, it's just so RUDE. And of course, the stakes are so much higher.
A few weeks ago I went to the gym and was wiping everything down both before and after, and a guy came to stand near me as I wiped down a machine, looked me in the eye, and COUGHED. Like a challenge, because he's a big strong guy I guess. The gym is mostly nice, and one thing I'd liked about it is that it really supports the military, but that does attract a lot of MAGATs. I think it's a lot likelier I got sick from him than from the grocery store.
I hope you stay well!

She said she whipped out her baggy of wipes and did her cart and found that people in the store refused to at least stay a couple feet away (let alone 6ft). She said she eventually had to use her shopping cart as a battering ram to move people away.
My other sister and my niece went out in the rain Monday night "gloved up and with masks" and hit one of the smaller private supermarkets and then one of the regular markets, and they were able to load up. She said she discovered that they were stocking in the evenings vs overnight, so stuff is gone by early the next morning (as I have discovered).

(24,371 posts)And I should say that I enjoy looking at simulations like that. I've looked at numerous traffic simulations in the past and it's clear that vehicles on a freeway tend to behave like a fluid, so I find that fascinating.
The vid you linked does show a remarkable difference in transmission between the controlled queue and the random wandering, but in my experience, most people do tend to move from one side of a given grocery store to another. The problem starts when one of those people wandering down aisle 4 in front of the spices or soups or whatever, stops to look for what they want, OR turns and goes back to aisle 1 because they forgot to grab a head of lettuce. It forces everyone else to step past them or bunch up and wait to pass of just buggers up the whole thing anyway!
It's an interesting exercise though, but short of limiting the number of people in the door at a given time, and enforcing a "one-way" type policy for gathering groceries, I just don't see the model working.
IronLionZion
(45,466 posts)Which is why ordering for pickup is the best option for those with cars. Since only the workers would be moving around. And taking your chances with a no touch delivery from the warehouse is the best option for those without cars. Those services have been pretty bad in my area long before this pandemic so they are maxed out now. People have to wait several days for an available time slot, but it's worth it.
Some stores have limited the number of people inside, requiring lining up outside 6 ft apart. Which gets really interesting when it's raining or people sneeze from allergies.

(11,257 posts)My tips arent too useful because I mostly trade large long/short baskets that have a tiny edge and are purely quantitatively driven.
If I were to trade from a discretionary point of view, I would say GDP is looking at a -10% hit or worse. Look for SPX around 1500 before slowly deploying capital. Ive been all cash for a bit - missed a lot of the run up to mid February, but sitting tight now. Being in cash was due to two factors - partly waiting for the bubble to pop and also because trading has too many compliance issues that discourage it when working at a hedge fund - though I could have been in mutual funds without compliance issues...very busy though! I need to get my wife to manage that with my input. Just way too insanely busy!

Do people need to start standing there holding signs of exactly why they are at the grocery store and what they are getting so that other people can evaluate if that is considered essential or not? (35,295 posts)This is his wife, I used to be on du as unapatriciated but never signed back up after the hack. We both work at the same store. It is a very popular grocery in an middle class area. I still read daily but usually do not feel the need to give my input until now. His reason for this post is out of love for me. My youngest lives with us and has been fighting dermatomyositis since he was 13. The illness damaged most of his organs, he had a heart failure at 31 that required two stints. If this wasn't enough for our family to deal with my middle son was diagnosed with ACC cancer in 2017. He is a single father of three who we help support when his disability payment doesn't stretch (and that is every month).
First let me list who he is not talking about.
it is not about the single mother or those that are in need of groceries and supplies.
Who he is talking about are the whole families that come in with children some who are home from college.
Couples with their friends who tell us point blank that they really don't need much but wanted to get out of the house.
We do limit the amount of people, but our store is smaller than most grocery stores by company design. So social distancing is a challenge. They get right in your face and make fun of you if you back away. Or claim you are being rude. We deal with this on a daily basis. About a third of our customers act like it is spring break or vacation. Than we have the angry ones who don't understand when we are out of something. Like the the woman two days ago, we were out of her favorite wine. She had a hissy fit right in my face yelling that was the only reason she came in (mind you I wasn't her first victim only the last). Than there are the nice ones who just don't understand about keeping their distance, they are used to us gladly helping them but haven't quite caught on to keeping their distance.
He has to deal with me crying every night after work because I'm so afraid that one of our customers will infect me and I will bring it home to my son. I would love to stay home but cannot because I have nothing left in my leave account due to helping both of my sons during their illness, not to mention my mother passing and caring for her. I'm grateful to have a job so that I can provide that help to my family. All my husband is saying if you don't need to be there stay home. And if you do be kind but keep your distance.
One other thing, you don't know him so don't judge. He is the most caring compassionate man I have ever met. When I had used up all of my leave for my son's cancer surgeries, he used his to be there during his radiation (they are not his children and were adults when we married). He loves his job and considers what he is doing a call to duty and willing to do it for his community. All he is asking is that his community do their job and stay home if they don't need to be there.
So to us this is not funny. be well be safe... Patricia

(1,148 posts)I use LINK and Instacart doesn't accept it, so I have to go once in a while.
I went yesterday because I was out of vegetables and supplies to make bread. I now have enough to feed me for two weeks, so I won't be going out again, except maybe to walk in the park by my house (no one goes there).

And maybe you can hire a crew of Amish guys to build a giant storage barn for all of your crap. Be sure they dig a big cold cellar underneath for all the meat.
And remember, its not about how much you have for your self. Its about how much you prevent others from having.
