(14,961 posts)I wonder how many residents overall live there?

(18,770 posts)The facility consists of a 60-bed Assisted Living and a 51-bed Nursing Center. Private and semi-private rooms are available, including some units with kitchenettes on AL side. The Senior Residence, which was converted into a Comprehensive Personal Care Home in 1996, provides care under the supervision of registered nurses and other medical professionals.

(58,673 posts)though they waited to long, partly due to no testing and it being on the leading edge. Noboy really understood what was happening there. We didn't really know what they were dealing with at first. 22% of residents died at last report.

(2,517 posts)those could be my grandparents and great aunts & uncles.
Thank you to the team helping to move the residents out and sending what I hope are not useless positive vibes and energy their way.

(36,110 posts)Once they're both gone, St. Joe's will see who continues to get it, likely learning the slow way, just how its handling contamination hasn't helped stop it.

(36,110 posts)No sense wanting olds to die if they become contamination hotspots that end up killing others -- it's like stupidly wanting one's own death warrant.

(6,448 posts)I haven't seen my dad since September, when I got my transplants and have no immune system because of the anti-rejection meds.
I've been in 2 rehab facilities that quarantined with the flu and was told by doctors to stay away from his assisted living at all times.

(8,838 posts)Just got a taste of what happens when you put a large group of seniors together for a Bridge Tournament and one of the attendees has Corona, but not yet symptomatic.......
If the Red states and cities think they will be spared and immune, tell them to check in with Florida, New Orleans, and C.Springs co.....

We did not need a global pandemic response team
We did not need that epidemiologist in China from the CDC watching out for potential global pandemics
We did not need scientists working on a coronavirus vaccine (SARs) that was defunded in 2018
We did not need those W.H.O.'s C-19 test kits
We did not need to know about the late Jan./early Feb. C-19 case in Seattle that was discovered by
Seattle's Dept. of Health and the University of Washington. (Trump's CDC told them not to talk about
their findings and to stop testing.)

Historic NY
(37,451 posts)no visitors were supposed to be allowed into the premise. Some residents are assisted living but are able to go out and some drive. So the answer is?
DallasNE
(7,403 posts)Because an individual can be a carrier 2-3 days before the first symptom shows up.
Perhaps these steps were even done, but taking the temp of everybody before they are allow to enter the facility and also take the temp of each resident at least once daily. They have temple thermometers that are fast, easy and accurate. Wipe the thermometer head after each test with an alcohol wipe. After each elevated temp start a new wipe.
You don't go from zero to 24 in one day without there being a breakdown somewhere.
Historic NY
(37,451 posts)Some vets live there. I see the AL is closed so perhaps they go out wandering.
DallasNE
(7,403 posts)There had to be regulations in place governing people that come and go at that facility. Apparently they were ignored and this is the consequence. Heartbreaking.

(32,626 posts)deliveries? Since there is no testing, they'd have to start getting sick before anyone would know. Then it's too late...for everyone.

(25,865 posts)And those working there are chronically underpaid.
You get what you pay for is sadly true here. Many people cannot afford to pay the market rate for a high-quality facility, thanks in no small part to a for-profit health care system.
But as sad as this is, it's not as bad as what's happened in Spain where staff apparently walked completely out of one or more nursing homes, leaving patients to die in their beds.

(15,810 posts)My grandparents are long since dead; most of them passed a couple of decades ago.
My father passed a few years back. My mother is right at the vulnerable age being in her early 80s, as are my in-laws.
I worry about all of them, but am strangely grateful that none of them are in a care facility. They are still living in their homes.
Doesnt mean they arent vulnerable- just perhaps less so. Care homes just seem like a terrible place to be and they shouldnt seem that way.

(3,580 posts)I live in New Jersey, too.
My mother-in-law lives in a nursing home in New Jersey and they banned all non-medical visitors several weeks ago.
It's been hard for the family not to visit her or take her out but we all understand it's for the best. I had warned my husband that it would happen.
Of course, staff could go out after work and becoming infected and bring it back, so hopefully they are taking precautions.
Looks like they are taking them to Morris County.

(275 posts)hope the virus does not spread to her nursing home...it is very hard to not be in physical contact with loved ones. My MIL will not leave the house right now. She asks that all wash theirs when coming into the house. She is very scared of catching it, since she has asthma, high blood pressure, etc. She's in her 80's, so understandable.
Praying that this virus comes to an end soon!!!

(621 posts)have HazMat suits, with respirators. Not saying they shouldnt. Im pointing out that if THIS is the recommended gear, our doctors, nurses, and medical staff are not going to do well, and this virus wont be stopped by uneducated/uncaring people deciding whether or not to practice social distancing or the local Wendys deciding on their own that their take-out window is essential.

(53 posts)They are moving them to an empty facility owned by the same corporate manager Care1. Maps give a driving distance of 32, 33 miles. and it is several counties over, too.
