New coronavirus symptoms emerge (digestive), prompting warning from Ohio's top doctor

COLUMBUS, Ohio (WJW) - "If you don't feel well in any way, stay home."

That's the advice from Ohio's Department of Health director Amy Acton as new symptoms are emerging as we learn more about COVID-19.

The outbreak first started in December, so the data is developing constantly.

All along, we have been told to look for cough, fever, fatigue and difficulty breathing.

Now, Dr. Acton says those symptoms have grown since we have learned more about the virus.

"Headache, fever, body aches, but we're seeing new symptoms emerge, both here in the United States and really great data that's been coming out of Cuyahoga County. Talking about GI upset, just feeling more fatigued than usual and sometimes not showing that fever, but you know when you're not feeling well," Dr. Acton said in a press conference Tuesday afternoon.

New research filed by doctors in China, shows just over half of the patients they looked at reported digestive issues that included diarrhea, vomiting, abdominal pain and lack of appetite.

However, this is a small sample and very new data.

That's why Dr. Acton is encouraging anyone who doesn't feel well to call their doctor.

5. One of the early hotbed counties here in PA - Montgomery (rim county of Philly)

recently expanded their testing eligibility to include the gastrointestinal criteria PLUS another set of symptoms recently reported about - "loss of smell and/or taste" -

WHO IS ELIGIBLE TO GET TESTED?

UPDATED Tue, March 24: Individuals who meet one or more of the following five (5) criteria will be eligible for testing:

• NEW: Persons of any age and with symptoms of sudden illness (such as fever OR cough OR shortness of breath OR loss of smell/taste AND including gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea OR vomiting OR diarrhea) with or without fever;

• UPDATED: First responders (law enforcement, fire, EMS, or dispatcher) AND concern for exposure to a patient with suspected COVID-19 OR symptoms of any sudden illness with or without fever;

• UPDATED: Health care workers providing direct patient care AND concern for exposure to a patient with suspected COVID-19 OR symptoms of any sudden illness with or without fever;

• Anyone with known or suspected direct contact to someone with COVID-19;

• Anyone who has been recommended by their doctor to get tested.

Due to the limited number of tests available, tests will be reserved for the high-risk individuals described above. Criteria may be enhanced or relaxed based on future availability of tests.

6. Its a new disease and now infecting more people

So their are gonna be different presentations and symptoms. Especially in a systematic virus.

Its like the side effects you hear on those drug commercials: may cause you to crave the taste of rodents , etc. They have to report everything

So bad i have symptoms of 5 different afflictions including hair loss and excessive flatulance!!

8. Don't mean to be disrespectful

Those were symptoms from the beginning. They just weren't being told about here. My father had "something" beginning of Feb. He complained of intestinal distress. KNOWING that was one of the symptoms made me start questioning what else was going on and calling everyday, multiple x's per day. IIRC there were appx 6 symptoms to look for in reports from other countries as opposed to here which was only listing 3 and was quite confusing especially having seen something different weeks before.
