One map shows how many coronavirus tests each US state has done so far

The coronavirus outbreak in the US continues to grow. So far, more than 40,000 cases have been confirmed across all 50 states, and at least 550 Americans have died.

Testing is a key part of fighting a pandemic - knowing the extent of an outbreak and how quickly it's spreading is an essential piece of information for policymakers, healthcare providers, and the public. After weeks of delays in ramping up its testing, the US is now beginning to roll out testing on a much larger scale. More than 290,000 Americans have been tested for the coronavirus, up from just 10,000 on March 12.

The COVID Tracking Project, a test-tracking resource from two journalists at The Atlantic and the founder of a medical-data startup, publishes frequently updated estimates of the number of tests for the novel coronavirus performed in each state. The project assembles data from state- and local-level public health sources to try to construct the best real-time picture possible of different states' testing systems.

The following map shows how many coronavirus tests each state has done in total since the beginning of the crisis, per 1 million residents (Population estimates come from the Census Bureau.) The data shows that two states with large outbreaks - Washington and New York - have tested the highest shares of their populations.

testing done outside the CDC. Isn't California operating independently of the CDC in part because the orange one has stifled any aid to California?

Most of my immediate family lives in that state and much of my concern is for them and their well-being.

In other words there is no intention to try and test everyone

I assume part of the reason is because of the shortage of test kits

Ohio was given very few test kits, so the state itself is guarding the use of its tests very carefully. Private entities (e.g. Cleveland Clinic and UH) are doing private testing - but there just aren't tests available.

At least in Ohio it isn't the lack of intent to try and test everyone - they would love to. It is purely the lack of test kits.

As of right now, 6 days later, we're still waiting on his results. One would think that producing these test results would be top priority, but I digress...

foam to test them. They've tested 521 people and we have 326 confirmed cases. This state must be crawling with unconfirmed positives.

Don't know the reason - but we don't.

Most of the testing is being handled by private entities (Cleveland Clinc & University Hospitals, for example). But if you listen to the 2 PM daily press conferences, Ohio was given very few test kits and are having to ration them for the most critical uses.

OH has more confirmed cases than 461(number of tests OH supposedly has done per OP).

With the quality of healthcare we have here, especially in the greater Boston area, I would expect a much higher level of testing.

They tower above other states in the number of tests conducted, which partially explains the number of cases they report.
