You're probably right that he's hard-right but could be illiberal/anti-liberal left. Similarities are often a lot stronger than differences between some of those.
Jefferson absolutely was liberal -- liberal personality passionately embracing radical ideas for the times, but NOT extremist personality. He was admired by all the prominent liberals and many conservatives of his time and worked awesomely well with them. Too well. He always wanted to go home, while all the groups he'd ever worked with pleaded for him to rejoin them in government.
But this guy, right or left, would obviously be the last to understand any of it.

(58,785 posts)comment on them now and then Poor Jefferson. There were fringe types in his time too with the peculiar but signature megalomania that won't allow them to realize what it means when they can count attendance without needing both feet.
