From the article:
As MSNBCs Chris Hayes said on Monday, there is a growing belief among the right-wing voices in Trumps ear that its worth it to roll back social distancing restrictions that have essentially brought the economy to a standstill.
But allowing people to go back to their pre-coronavirus lives will only make matters far worse than they are right now, Hayes said.
There is no option to just let everyone go back out and go back to normal if a pandemic rages across the country and infects 50 percent of the population and kills a percentage point at the low end of those infected and also melts down all the hospitals, the MSNBC host said. What kind of economy do you think youre going to have under those conditions?

How do we read this? Why exactly is Trump willing to do this?
The short answer is that Trump cares only about himself, and winning in November to protect against legal action.

(13,225 posts)NO planning by the federal government to stockpile PPE. Many hospitals will be unable to provide care for ANY health emergency, health insurance premium will skyrocket, the financial impact on businesses will be extended.
Trump is a sociopath to even suggest this, and a STUPID sociopath at that.

(19,066 posts)Bringing up car accident deaths. Saying a bad economy will lead to suicides. Blah blah blah.
I don't think he has the power to over rule the states, but he's trying to make the deaths of hundreds of thousands of people OK. It's sick and it's evil.
Proud Liberal Dem
(24,412 posts)but he doesn't need to. His MAGA cult will start breaking themselves out of isolation, making it difficult on governors and authorities to maintain it and likely sparking chaos once it becomes Trump vs. Governors over the economy.

(24,412 posts)if there are too many sick/dead people to run it? Trump obviously isn't thinking that a pile of dead bodies would be BAD for his-relection. Nobody else will even care about the economy no matter how "good" it is doing.

(42,641 posts)the economy has functioned well for the rich. The US mainstream media pretends otherwise, but when they speak of "the economy" doing well, they are speaking of Wall Street doing well.

(42,641 posts)there is no long range plan beyond the next quarter. And given what we already know and see regarding climate change, this obsession with short term gain is suicidal.

(3,707 posts)We all die. It is the unresolved reality of humanity.
Every death is different; every death is singular even when masses go together.
If an elderly priest says "leave me, save the young", so be it perhaps noble in dying.
If a grand parents wishes to remain with the grand kids, so be it equally in living.
We all die.
We do not all choose to kill.
The killing frenzy of the regressive-republican-conservative-tribe is frightening.
Death panels, wheelchairs and cliffs, seem to be the Cliff Notes to capitalism 101

(103 posts)He has clearly decided that there will be less fallout from re-opening everything than keeping it shut. There is no going back when a person like Trump makes that sort of internal, decision. His "gut" tells him he's correct and he will go with that over anything anyone says.
I feel very bad for all the people and families who will be collateral damage due to this.
