(115,706 posts)US airlines are cutting their flight schedules by 50% or more because there aren't enough passengers.

(2,248 posts)And I've been reading on boards that 200+ passenger airplanes are routinely going out with 10, 20, 30 poeple max.
That is never, ever going to last.
If Trump thinks he can wave his magic wand and get everybody traveling again, fat chance. The damage is done to the avaition industry. We're not going back. The crawlback (if there is one) will be slow and painful.
I'm not for a wholesale bailout of this industry, but our air system is vital and needed.

(115,706 posts)I have heard the same thing from a pilot for the airline I used to work for - many flights are being canceled because there are so few passengers. It's worse than the days following 9/11, which I remember vividly. Hardly anybody wanted to fly for months afterward, and the result was a lot of layoffs. Even though traffic gradually improved, all the major airlines filed bankruptcy just a few years later. We'll see this again, only sooner.

(115,706 posts)Industry and federal officials told the Journal that no final decisions have been made by the carriers or the White House, while airlines currently struggle to operate with limited passengers during the coronavirus pandemic.
Officials also said other options were under consideration to prevent a shutdown, but the spreading pandemic has made the shutdown seem more unavoidable to airline officials, pilot-union leaders and federal transportation officials, according to the Journal.
Federal Aviation Administration officials are concerned that the virus will spread among agency controllers and technicians, as almost a dozen of traffic-control facilities have had to cease operations temporarily after positive cases.
