Public encouraged to keep a diary

The Hancock Historical Museum, which counts many journals and diaries among its collection, is encouraging community members to start a journal of their experience living through the coronavirus pandemic.
Curator/archivist Joy Bennett said she uses diaries often in research. Newspaper articles from times past tend to focus more on the big picture, while diaries let her see individual people’s experiences.
“You get a sneak peek into the life of someone else,” she said. Bennett has her own grandfather’s diary, which details his time in the Civilian Conservation Corps. She read about him building a road, or mentioning a movie he saw. She said the diary is not detailed, but “I love it.” And, if she were researching the CCC, this would help her learn about a typical day in the life of a worker.
Some of the diaries in the museum’s collection are more like pocket calendars, but there’s also a lovely journal with a leather cover — and a lock — from World War II.
