Arizona man dies after self-medicating with chloroquine to treat coronavirus

A Phoenix-area man is dead and his wife is under critical care after the two took chloroquine phosphate in an apparent attempt to self-medicate for the novel coronavirus, according to hospital system Banner Health.

Chloroquine has been touted by President Donald Trump as a possible treatment for Covid-19, but it's also "an additive commonly used at aquariums to clean fish tanks," Banner Health said in a statement. Chloroquine is approved by the Food and Drug Administration for treating malaria, lupus and rheumatoid arthritis. But the FDA has not approved it to treat the coronavirus.
Banner Health experts emphasized that the medication -- as well as other "inappropriate medications and household products" -- "should not be ingested to treat or prevent this virus."

"Given the uncertainty around COVID-19, we understand that people are trying to find new ways to prevent or treat this virus," Dr. Daniel Brooks, Banner Poison and Drug Information Center medical director, said in the statement. "But self-medicating is not the way to do so."

Banner Health, which is based in Arizona, didn't give any details on how the couple, both in their 60s, acquired the chloroquine or which Banner hospital treated them.

Well so much for chloroquine. And this probably also kills the self-medicating movement too.

I didn't even think the more toxic chloroquine (vs hydrochoroquine) was obtainable here.

Indeed, this couple ingested chloroquine phosphate, which is toxic at relatively small doses (~2mg), I am lead to believe.

I don't type this lightly, but this is blood on Trump's hands. Seriously, no one rational would have been trumpeting precise names of unadvised drugs as a 'cure' for viruses in public. It is shocking behavior. Unscrupulous doctors prescribe Oxycontin for a headache, why would you put this thought of pseudo-antivirals into the medicine-for-profit populous?

Within thirty minutes of ingestion, the couple experienced immediate effects requiring admittance to a nearby Banner Health.

Oh incidentally, don't snort or woof gasoline to get high, smoke a joint or having a beer would be better. DO NOT strike a match to light your joint anywhere around an open canister of gasoline, it may explode. DO NOT include cyanide, poison hemlock, poison mushrooms, or arsenic in a MJ joint and then smoke it. You are better off just smoking pot, the high is more pleasurable and longer lasting, and you might be too.

wife (who is still fighting for her life) but it appears they self-medicated by using Fish Tank cleaner (a form of Chloroquine phosphate not intended for medicinal use).

People do irrational things when they are afraid. When you have a narcissistic asshole who is unfit for anything, but somehow landed the most powerful political office in the country, a position bestowed with trust and authority, but who spouts inane bullshit constantly, there will be problems. Trump has been spouting bullshit about hydrochloroquine. These poor people reached for what they had that they likely thought was similar and they paid the price.

This is still on Trump.
