(2,019 posts)Huh. We FINALLY tested a bunch of people.
But overall, whats the percentage of population? Its not super huge.
Lets be careful, but keep it in perspective.

If we were testing at the same rate as those other countries, I shudder at what our numbers would look like.

(6,414 posts)Our testing has significantly increased in the last week. Its not where it needs to be, but its not accurate to say were not testing.

(35,337 posts)and increase cardiovascular health.
We need more testing. But one of the two reasons for the big leap in cases is increased testing, not lack of testing.
The other is the only reason that some want to acknowledge, an actual increase in cases.
It's impossible to tease those two numbers apart and say the percentage due to increased tests and increased incidence.
China had a similar kind of jump when they had a test shortage and altered the reporting guidelines to include clinical (symptom-based diagnosis).

(83,853 posts)18. We also need to reduce our population's obesity
and increase cardiovascular health.
Have we had 11.4 deaths for obesity since January 22nd 2020? NO!
We are in one huge crisis right now. This disease is highly contagious. A million may well die in the US alone. The man at the helm is a petulant child and has not a clue what is to come.
The other is the only reason that some want to acknowledge, an actual increase in cases.
Well, yes. The reason we see the jump is more testing. We have people walking around, no symptoms, going on spring break...PARTYING despite the warnings. Whooping it up at bars and having a grand time. Every breath they exhale is spreading it, to their mothers, fathers and grandparents. They, the selfish ones are spreading it to us all.

Your message is clear and unambiguous. Everyone knows what you mean. We need more testing and we need it now, like you said. The levels of testing thus far have been too little too late and strikingly for those well connected over just anyone in the general public.
You rock! Keep up the good fight!

(15,326 posts)To any significant level, we aren't testing. And we are only testing those who present. We have no idea how prevalent this disease is in the general population.

That's how it is right now. Which keeps testing extremely depressed.

This is what happens if you have no testing. You have no clue how many got infected. Hold on tight, we ain't seen nothing yet.

(58,692 posts)yes, we're getting more testing done, but the slowness of bringing that up to speed means that the disease is spreading faster as we procrastinate.

(35,337 posts)It's just that people look up the hierarchy when making comparisons, and don't really look down that often.
It's a conceit of those low on the totem pole that those higher up are always looking down at them. "They really don't think about you because you're just not that important to them" is hardly comforting. Then again, very seldom is the truth comforting.
Among reasonably advanced countries, we're near the bottom. (I don't know whether to include Russia in that group, because Russia ranks below us.)

(1,822 posts)Almost 11,000 in the past 2 days! Based on how it was doubling every 3-4 days it was supposed to be 16,000 by Sunday. By Sunday itll be 30,000. The thing is its only effecting a few places badly right now. Just like that Italian said 1st it has a few hot zones and then its everywhere. We have 2 weeks to get this under control before this begins to become a nightmare.
Igel
(35,337 posts)Doesn't necessarily say much about the actual incidence.
It's the old reporting problem. Hate crimes, for instance, increased rather sharply. Hate crimes reported per capita increased rather not much. Both were true, and reconciling the two claims requires realizing that the number of agencies reporting had sharply increased. More incidents but about the same incidence.

(15,326 posts)Getting the number of NBA players or Repuglicon senators with/without COVID-19 is not meaningful.
Reporting the number of people who present with symptoms and test positive/negative is not an overall population sample.
Randomly testing 10,000 people from various walks of life, situations might give a decent estimate.
That would mean having 10,000 test kits available that aren't spoken for by the rich folks. It would also mean dump's "close to zero" number would be in jeopardy. Won't happen with these people in power.
