of how much easier it is to have a backstock of dried/ canned vegetables, beans, rice, pasta, and grains rather than relying on fresh meats?

Yes, it will be easier on people who know how to cook from scratch.
Yes, it will be easier on vegetarians who know how to cook from scratch.

I could easily live for a couple of months on what I have in the house without stocking up. Wouldn't be awesome but canned and dry goods pack a longer-lasting nutritional punch than a standard meat-and-potatoes diet.

Though the requirements to do so safely are more stringent than with vegetables.

There will be shortages. If CA has half its population infected within the next 8 weeks it will hit CA agriculture, then the rest of the country hard. I was reading chef Andrew Zimmern tweets and he said this will happen.

When states ordered restaurants and bars to close, the supermarkets got slammed by people who realized they had to cook more often.

If beef becomes scarce, chicken and pork will get slammed. If all meats become scarce, veggies will be slammed.

People have to eat, and they will hoard whatever they can find.

Luckily I have a boat and can catch fish. I have caught 1000 pounds in one trip. Don't do that anymore, but the fish are still there and I can still catch that much if I want to. Even squid is available if you know where and when to look, and how to catch. And don't even ask about dogfish......

Protein is out there. But people who go to markets are afraid of empty shelves.

I can walk to a Winn Dixie from the house and was there this afternoon. Large sections of the portioned chicken section is empty, but still beef and pork available.

It doesn't matter how much food we have if we can't get it to where it needs to be.
