(5,942 posts)They have storms several times a week that are like CAT-5 hurricane wind speeds. You only stay to experience it once, just to say youve done it. Hell have to fly home through Los Angeles. Ugh.

(18,663 posts)But I know at some point if you are still in Antarctica, you are there until spring.
If the base is stocked, this might be a time to volunteer to winter over.

(5,942 posts)but hell be furious if he has to. Said he absolutely hates what hes experienced of the winter so far. And theyve been assuring them that it will be worked out. Considering they have no cases there, I cant imagine the NSF and our Embassy wont be able to pull it off, but i just dont trust anything these days.

(5,942 posts)I felt like such a horrible person because my first thought was that I hope he doesnt return carrying the virus. Im sure he wouldnt meet the stringent physical requirements, but I still had that thought.

(5,942 posts)We are responsible for maintaining the roads and grounds of the station to include Phoenix airfield, Willy airfield, and NASAS LDB (long distance balloon) facilities out on the ice shelf. We also work directly with the NSF on traverse operations from Ross Island to the South Pole. We utilize all types of heavy equipment here and are currently working on the AIMS project which is established to reconstruct the entire station here. We operate numerous types of heavy equipment and also we deal with my favorite - vessel operations. Hes former Air Force, Florida boy, surfing fanatic. First thing he had to say about the place had to do with the ridges on the ice shelf - how they look like waves and are 10 to 15 ft tall. Im sure you know about all that stuff. Im consistently blown away by the pictures he sends. I hope he makes it home in April.

(5,942 posts)The last flight to actually drop someone off here was the first week in February, and it dropped off some NSF higher-ups for a tour and they left that week. So most people were delivered here in January.

(5,942 posts)a volcano near him that has crazy cloud formations when its sunny. Oh, and his stations power system is grounded to a D6 bull dozer at the bottom of the bay under the ice. Very occasionally they get shocked in the dorms when they take showers.
