Coronavirus doctor says lung scans for young patients were 'nothing short of terrifying'

A Belgian doctor working to battle the coronavirus says he’s treated several seriously ill young patients — and their lung scans were “nothing short of terrifying,” according to reports.

Dr. Ignace Demeyer, who works at a hospital in Aalst, said an increasing number of people between the ages of 30 and 50 have presented with severe symptoms, despite having “blank medical records” that show no underlying conditions that would make them high-risk, the Brussels Times reported.

“They just walk in, but they are terribly affected by the virus,” Demeyer told the Belgian broadcaster VRT.

He said CT scans indicated they were suffering from severe lung damage.

“The images we took yesterday are nothing short of terrifying,” the doctor told the station.

From the article:

Smoking rates are dropping in Belgium, but are still “enormously high”, health care expert Dr. Anne Boucquiau stressed on Monday, on the sidelines of the presentation of the Générations sans tabac (Generations without Tobacco) movement. According to a 2013 health survey by the Public Health Institute , 23% of Belgians aged 15 and above are cigarette smokers. “It’s a positive trend, but 23% countrywide is still enormously high, especially when we know what that implies” said Dr. Boucquiau. “Studies have shown that the average smoker loses eight years of life. At the same time, there is also a loss of healthy years of life. It is estimated that smokers spend an average of six years of life with disabilities or chronic illnesses linked to tobacco consumption.”

such as diabetes or heart failure,” Demeyer added.

Italian doctors expressed similar concerns. The death rate doesn't describe the total damage. Many they feel will be compromised or disabled.

It really is an awful virus and nothing near the flu by any means.
