Some conservatives willing to 'sacrifice the elderly' to save the economy from coronavirus: op-ed

Published 1 min ago on March 17, 2020
By Sky Palma

As the international response to the coronavirus ramps up, the inevitable damage to the world economy is unavoidable. While common sense and simple human decency would suggest that stemming the spread of infections at the price of the economy is worth it, there are some, namely conservative voices in America, who don’t exactly agree.

Writing in The Week this Tuesday, Noah Millman cites the example of CNBC host Rick Santelli, who said earlier this month that “maybe we’d be just better off if we gave [coronavirus] to everybody, and then in a month it would be over because the mortality rate of this probably isn’t going to be any different if we did it that way than the long-term picture.” According to Santelli, otherwise we’d be “wreaking havoc on global and domestic economies.”

Millman writes that this same philosophy is what caused the UK to come under an avalanche of criticism for its response to the outbreak. The logic for this line of thinking says that the elderly are not the economy’s most productive citizens, and the economic impact of them dying earlier might even be positive. Also, reserving more urgent medical treatment for the young and economically viable would prevent the health system from being overwhelmed.

“I hope nobody would be comfortable making an argument like that explicitly,” Millman writes. “But it lurks in the background of the all-purpose dismissiveness voiced by the likes of Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity about the seriousness of the virus (who are following the President’s lead in doing so), or in pieces like this one by Heather Macdonald at the conservative cultural journal The New Criterion.”

They likely have a mini-icu set up that only they have access to. With ventilators, drugs, ppe, and everything else they would need if they got ill. Probably in-home already.

And of course a private army of nurses and tech's.

It's what their billions can buy. It's why they are so blatantly arrogant towards others.

I can't believe that some actually wish their parents and other elderly will just die.

It saddens me greatly.

My parents have both been gone for almost 20 years now and there is not a day that goes by that I do not think of them and wish they were still here. They were members of the Greatest Generation. They were proud Americans that loved this county. This whole thing going on now would break their hearts and minds.

Shame on anyone that wishes the elderly and those will illnesses will just go away and die.

& recommend.

I seem to recall a lot of chaos pandemonium generated about DEATH PANELS in regards to public healthcare access.

Hmmm. Who was that again? Was it the people who are now proclaiming themselves members of the DEATH PANEL BOARD?

It sounds a tad hypocritical. They wouldn't do that, would they? They wouldn't rely on that out of expediency and for the sake of conspiracy theory, manipulative influencing?

So, it's family values MINUS old, worthless Grandma and Grandpa. I guess it is updated as needs be. That's conservative of them.

On the Discovery channel. We've "lost a step" and so, when the lions come looking for dinner, the rest of the herd---the young and healthy and swift--- naturally stampede away and before we know it, Simba has us by the throat.

It's just "nature's way", ya see. Some call it "thinning the herd". After all, we're just like the animals.

Af least, some of us are.

I have to take the don't care thing back, they are, in spite of the virus still worried about fetuses.

There will have to hundreds of thousands dead in this country before they wake up.

zap these idiots.

Many years ago, I watched a video of a discussion between two young men who, even at that time, favored putting the elderly and compromised adults in a separate unit to die naturally with no treatment, whatsoever, to cut down on health costs. I was much younger then, but this video made me so angry, I immediately fired off a letter to my congressmen to let them know how cruel and selfish this was and that I expected them to think carefully about ever considering such a proposal.

I'm much older now and would be in that group shoved off into a corner to die.

I would give anything to remember the names of those two, but their names will come to me...if and when I most need them.

in favor of more suburban/rural private hospitals. You can't get treated without insurance, and without prior authorization, which would magically be rationed to the "right" kinds of patients.

It won't just be all seniors that don't get the magic ticket to an icu bed. It will be select groups of all ages.

And taxes for school districts. If they don’t have a personal need for the tax, they are against it. F Santelli and the brood of children he put through public schools. Old people paid for that s—- and now it’s time for them to enjoy a bit of peace if they can.

There are no more selfish people than there were last month or before nov 2016; they’re just making themselves known.

This is the dumbed down randian, nietzschean and nazi philosophy propagated by right wing radio and Fox News that is practiced by McConnell and the Republicans and fully realized in the chaotic pseudo dictatorship of Trump.
Unbelievable that this perversion of Darwinism is still so pervasive in the 21st century.
These people are sociopathic monsters, who should be imprisoned, yet somehow they control our lives. For my sanity, I have to believe that a reckoning will come, and that Americans will wake up. What will it take? Perhaps this crisis will finally do it.
Yeah, right... “Trump gave me $1000, he’s got my vote” - I can see it coming.
