Video emerges showing Trump talking about cutting pandemic team in 2018, despite saying last week 'I didn't know about it'

A video has emerged of Donald Trump talking about cutting the US pandemic response team in 2018 – days after claiming that he knew nothing about the disbanded White House unit.

Mr Trump said of the pandemic team that “some of the people we’ve cut they haven’t been used for many, many years and if we ever need them we can get them very quickly and rather then spending the money”.

“I’m a business person, I don’t like having thousands of people around when you don’t need them,” he added.

The US president has come under fire in recent days for his decision to disband the National Security Council directorate at the White House responsible for planning the US’s preparedness for future pandemics.

The unit had been established by the previous White House administration in 2014 after the outbreak of Ebola.

2. What a cheap bastard. He doesn't like to pay people if he feels they're not needed right then.

But then when they’re needed, they’ll be right there, ready and able to do the job. He probably feels the same way about insurance...”Why should I pay for insurance if I don’t need it? I’ll wait to buy it if I have an accident.” That’s not how it works, Donald. If he had a brain he’d know that.

3. Good points. His statement about him being busy and not needing all these extra people around

was telling. The statement strikes me that he perhaps was thinking some of those people will have important issues they need to talk to him about when he wants to golf.

that those people, although not dealing with a pandemic every day they're employed, would be just sitting around twiddling their thumbs. They'd be studying the newest tests and methods of containing a pandemic, making plans that could be put in place at a moments notice etc. Calling them in after a pandemic has already started is playing catch-up from day one. Everyone knows how playing catch-up goes: It doesn't. You never catch up. You're always behind the eight ball, one or two steps behind the virus, just like we are now.

So here's to you, St. Donnie, for saving a little money back then, but now paying billions of dollars and countless lives playing catch-up to a virus that could have been easily contained, if you were as smart as a garden slug . Too bad you're not.

Fucking moron!

Pandemic team. You are 100% correct. They could have been ready on a moment’s notice to head off the Covid-19 situation — had they been in place. But since in his great wisdom he saw no need and has zero understanding how that works, he sent them packing. I am amazed any of the professionals trying to deal with this crisis can stomach being in the same room with him. Oh, the books about him will write themselves! His legacy is sealed and it ain’t pretty.

5. Why the media still hasn't pounced on this and made this 24/7 news headlines is really suspicious

This could really tank Trump in.

Lock him up.

Here's to hoping he'll do that at the right time (October surprise?).

13. Just to avoid confusion: This isn't video from 2018. It's from February 26,2020

It's not as if this is "discovered" video-- he made these statements three weeks ago in a televised press briefing that was reported upon at the time.

Statement at 45 minute mark of the video from that press briefing.https://www.c-span.org/video/?469747-1/president-trump-announces-vice-president-pence-charge-coronavirus-response

It was a ridiculous statement, and its shows he knew about the cuts, but I've seen reports that this "surfaced" video is from 2018. It's not.
