'Leave some for your neighbors' officials urge as Seattle grocers struggle to keep shelves full
Since the first few confirmed cases of COVID-19 in King County, people have rushed out stock up on certain items, namely and inexplicably toilet paper.
But there have been no recommendations by government or health officials to start buying food or other supplies in bulk. There's been quite the opposite in fact, as departments of health and government executives have urged people to not buy toilet paper or surgical masks by the cart full.
We want the public to be assured that if they will return to their normal pace of grocery shopping that there will be an adequate supply of products for their consumption, said Jan Gee, president and CEO of the Washington Food Industry Association and its educational foundation in a news release from the Washington State Department of Health.
And shelves are continually emptied now, not because of a "disrupted supply chain," the news release said, but from consumers overshopping.
