I never got that except for looks.
Since the late 70s, major acts have been playing through world class sound systems with equally great monitor set ups. You would never need that to be heard or hear yourself.
The SR systems are a quarter million watts, so those 1,200 watts don't mean much to the house.
Monitor systems are 40 or 50k with over a dozen cabinets.
I wouldn't be surprised is 75% of those cabinets are unplugged.
If the guitar got that loud, the sound guy would kill the guitar player.
I know it pissed off our guy when stage volume got to high.

Back in the day (i.e. 70's and 80's) though in house PA systems weren't nearly as good as they are now and plenty of the sound you heard was coming from the stage, and you needed a lot of wattage and speakers to move air if you wanted to reach the back of the hall or stadium.

Also ... valve driven watts are way louder than equivalent solid state watts, and most PA's are solid state.

Our PA was 8 cabinets, 4 horns, and a bit over 12k watts. Our monitor system was 6 cabinets and around 2400. And we were just playing 300 to 500 seat rooms.
I agree that likely just 2 were hooked up, maybe 4 with 2 heads.
Also, the loudness thing is only when we're talking about 100s of watts. A 50 watt Marshall is louder, easily, than 50 watts SS. But, if the PA is running at average of 7500 watts, the Marshall isn't 50 times louder. That would be nearly 60dB!
I think we completely agree that this is essentially for show.

And where it was taken. I think there was time when bands legitimately did hook up, say, 16 Marshall 4x12 cabs to 8x100W heads ... but of course the desirability of such a setup is long since past

The age of the photo never occurred to me.
I've been using (well, I don't gig anymore) a Mesa Boogie, 1x12 or a Marshall combo with 2x12 since the late 80s.
And I'm the piano player! (Yeah, I played both on stage.)

I remember Festus always arguing with the doctor. In this one episode, the doctor laments Festus never learned to read, and Festus advanced the argument that he never learned to read because how could he know if what he was learning was right or wrong. And, he continued, if he learned wrong, he'd be 'readin' wrong writing!'

Those are characters from better days. Seems like the world is moving on, now.
