Big Pharma Prepares to Profit From the Coronavirus

As the new coronavirus spreads illness, death, and catastrophe around the world, virtually no economic sector has been spared from harm. Yet amid the mayhem from the global pandemic, one industry is not only surviving, it is profiting handsomely.

“Pharmaceutical companies view Covid-19 as a once-in-a-lifetime business opportunity,” said Gerald Posner, author of “Pharma: Greed, Lies, and the Poisoning of America.” The world needs pharmaceutical products, of course. For the new coronavirus outbreak, in particular, we need treatments and vaccines and, in the U.S., tests. Dozens of companies are now vying to make them.

It is a great benefit to certain kinds of profit and not at all a new approach to capitalism.

I am sure corporate America will adapt in order to assure profits. The commercials during the Spit Rally, ah, speech, today were a good indicator of further privatization. I guess we now pay the government to be a go-between for corporate benefit, primarily. It's kind of like the insurance industry, I guess.

They had an episode about Valeant Pharmaceuticals. What a bunch of arrogant pricks. Greedy price gouging MF'rs. Congress lets them get away with this shit.

I'm not sure what posts like this are supposed to accomplish when we have no idea who will be developing a vaccine or how much it will cost yet. I doubt it's going to be $475,000, a reference point in the article.

Oh, and love the digs at Joe Biden. Ah, there's the reason for the article.

and if and when a vaccine is developed, it won't cost anymore than the current influenza vaccine costs, and if the Democrats plan is passed, the testing and vaccine will be free to the public, with or without insurance. The costs will be paid by the government

specimens. If a vaccine is developed, which is not certain, it will likely be priced like other vaccines.
