if the water plant in your area continues to operate. Remember, it's people who make utilities work, they are not simply a force of nature like wind, rain, and earthquakes.

As we drain plastic milk jugs and plastic juice containers, we're filling them up with water from the faucet, while there is still pressure.

But, I agree with you on the carload of Evian.

This is not a rational action. I think people are responding to the "worst case scenario". There is also very little confidence in government right now.

I live in California. I have to be prepared for earthquakes. I was living in Los Angeles in 94 when the Northridge quake took down the interstate freeway. I moved to Santa Cruz in 96 and the Loma Prieta earthquake transformed the county. My wife was there and didn't have services for a long time. We have some water stored because in an earthquake obviously the mains can break and services disrupted.

This is different, but if the situation gets bad enough, there could be disruptions in services including water. I don't think that it is likely, but people, in their fear and mistrust, are probably thinking that it will happen.

I agree that this idea of hoarding supplies appears silly, but people are reacting out of emotion, not reason.

that we rotate every few months in case of earthquakes. Here in the armpit of California I have little faith in emergency services getting things running in any reasonable time frame.

When you get sick, you don't want to have to go to the store. If you have the opportunity to plan ahead, then why not?

Plus, this sickness is highly contagious.

So, the whole family may feel too sick to go to the store

Plus, if someone is sick, should we be going to the store and exposing others?

Regarding Amazon, you may get deliveries now, but will you still get timely deliveries if 70% of the population is sick?

I will add that early on the stores emptied of masks, but they were still available on Amazon. Days later, you couldn't even get them on Amazon.

There will always be people who wait too long. For those people, I recommend ordering a Bidet before they sell out, too

My daughter works in a supermarket. Yesterday, they had a customer who piled 30 gallons of bleach in her cart. The manager told her she could only buy five, and she freaked right out, yelling and screaming. She left - without any bleach - after he threatened to call the police. There were many less serious incidents in which a customer tried to buy up ridiculous amounts of a particular item, and the manager put reasonable and even generous limits on them, and the customers got angry. I expect there will be actual fights in the stores pretty soon.

Panic buying is a strange phenomena, especially given the scenario we are facing. At this time, stores need to be enforcing limits on things like toilet paper, hand sanitizer and other panic items. A lot are now doing that.

People are scared and fear shuts down rational thinking.

bulk orders which I can't afford nor do I have the room to store. I have enough to get me through a few weeks and some tissues and paper towels as backup, but it's kind of strange not to be able to place a reasonable order. I ordered groceries for delivery today and they are completely out of TP and ordered some things from CVS and they aren't delivering TP either. There is a serious shortage.

There is NO storage space for bulk shopping, and a very tiny kitchen so I can only buy so much unless I want to be tripping over items in my living space. I guess I will just have to wing it. As long as I have running water, I can always take baths/showers if I run out of TP.

The only real panic some people have had is being stuck on the toilet with an empty roll of TP. It's almost like TP is being used as a security blanket. I mean, we do not have even close to adequate leadership at the top. No one is going to comfort them with eloquent and prescient words of wisdom. No one has assured the American people that someone competent is overseeing this crisis. On another level, it might be a Freudian response to the bullshit we're hearing from the Trump administration.

and even had moments of slight panic about it as well. My thought process is that if for some reason we were all stuck at home and couldn’t get to the store for basic necessities like toilet paper, it would pay to have some backstock at home. I tried to make a short list of absolute necessities to have in my home during a crisis and toilet paper in fresh water we’re at the top of my list. Toilet paper was on my regular shopping list last weekend for both my home and our two businesses. When it was clear it was unavailable store after store after store, I admit that I got worried.

hell just jump in the shower or use a washcloth or something and throw them in the wash.

Its really not that big of a deal but says a lot about where our society is. People have been pooping since the beginning of human existence yet even 75 years ago getting reliable tp was difficult.

unless you're working at home and can't use your employer's TP. Even so, it seems kind of nuts to buy such crazy amounts of it. It could be that people see other people buying a lot of it and therefore think there won't be enough for them, so they buy a lot of it too. So that provokes more and more unnecessary buying because everybody starts thinking they won't have any TP at all. And that seems to be exactly what has happened.

When the catalpa tree in my yard leafs out later this spring I'll be all set. The leaves are huge.

I got notified about one today. I put it in my cart and by the time I clicked to check out it disappeared from the cart. I took my time about it so I was too late. Someone added it to thier cart and checked out before I could finish my transaction.

I wanted some Lysol spray since the wipes we have on hand are harsh on my skin. So it wasn't your sisters!
