We're told those of us with Medicare, Medicaid, etc will have it paid.
I heard on this morning's news of someone in Florida,
apparently with no insurance,
got charged $3,000+ for a test.

(10,952 posts)thought of as a way to create a money making machine. The other possibility is that, if there is not system (insurance or otherwise) to pay outrageous test fees, fewer people will want to be tested. The fewer the number of people tested, the more Trump can deny what is going on. Not all states will react to the Coronavirus like Governor Inslee who is doing everything he can to the people of his state.

and that these untested people can infect others.

Newest Reality
(12,712 posts)We are having a stronger shift towards a cooperate mentality, i.e., the highest priority and legal obligation is profit and the bottom-line.
Human "resources", (what a demeaning newspeak term), ah, disposable, replaceable, etc. When capitalism becomes the highest priority, then, when things go awry and the economy is down, that encourages shock and awe capitalism, (and the Hegelian Dialect) vulture capitalism and everything else that goes with full on exploitation of human beings without any consideration for the damage done.
We might want to be wary of attempts to overlay and prioritize corporate and financial values over human health, safety, well being, value, etc., especially since money does not spend itself and profit is still being made by people, not inanimate objects.
The government exists to serve the people, the people do not exist to serve the government. That is the difference between a democracy and a dictatorship. That helps to keep things in proportion lest we go full tyranny, corruption and begin to foster heinous projects of cruelty and neglect for HUMAN BEINGS. You can insert many institutions in place of government in the above, including the name Trump.

(28,811 posts)the guidelines are excessively restrictive. you actually have to have traveled to one of the hot spots, and that means China, Italy, etc, plus you must have a fever, and you must have respiratory symptoms.
otherwise - say you had visited the care home in WA state, which accounts for one of the confirmed cases here, or you were exposed to someone here who has a confirmed case, you can get your doctor to order the test from a private lab.
it's doubly sickening that our country cares less about its people than it does about its shareholders. i figure (rightly or wrongly) that the government is buying their tests from the company trump partially owns. the lagging on making the tests widely available it seems to me could be explained by trumpworld's desire to make sure they got their slice of the pie.

He had one of those junk insurance policies, so little or no coverage for those expenses.
I have no idea what the real cost of testing for this virus is. The policy in NYS is that all testing expenses will be covered. Now if they were actually doing large scale testing, that would mean something.

(34,195 posts)I don't know who you are referencing.
The news story I heard on cable TV was about a test for the coronavirus,
and the patient had no insurance,
not 'junk' insurance.
