I just heard a talking head on CNN observe that a several...

... day delay in getting test results is not a good thing for older, vulnerable patients. I thought there was no specific treatment for Corona virus, and that the treatment for severe repiratory disease was the same no matter what caused it. Is this not correct? If I'm correct, then she had no business being a CNN talking head. Right?

The need for a quick turn around is so that others can be protected. Right????

Lemme know what you think.

1. Patients are being intubated and put on respirators.

The pneumonia seems to come on fast with this virus, so tests are needed to predict that. Also, I think a treatment will be found soon. Drugs currently available target the cellular receptor and the intracellular protein that the virus uses to infect cells. Other anti-retroviral drugs are being tried that stop viral replication, and if one is found to work consistently, there will be a clinical trial. It will become important to treat as soon as possible.

and actually very intelligent and informative... do you have enough info and
personal speculation to post a thread of your own?

2. I think you're correct

that knowing whether one is infected or not will guide their behavior in exposing others.
For now, if we get it, we're just supposed to treat it like any cold/flu and call the doctor if we have a high fever over a certain period of time or if we can't breathe. And the directions I've seen specifically say to call the doctor--not run to the e/r.

I had someone yesterday, demand to know where I heard asymptomatic cases, were contagious...I was like, where have you been?

3. It is the matter of isolation

a person with normal pneumonia versus a person with corona virus.

and we simply don't have enough isolation beds / wards for every suspected case of Covid-19.

Almost all test kits are using a feature of this virus (either the DNA or protein reactions at the receptors that are specific to Covid-19. Almost all of these have to be sent to a lab for analysis.

I'm sure they are working on more immediate result testing kits.

6. Right. The patient his/her self will not suffer from a slow turn around.

But others will. Not what the talking head said.

but absolutely...it will make no difference to the victim... unless they are forced to wait to be treated because the hospital or doctor won't admit them because of the unknown status of their disease.

I could see a hospital not want to admit a Covid-19 patient into a general ward for treatment of pneumonia because of risk of infecting other patients. And we will soon (don't know how soon) run out of isolation beds / wards in hospitals.

7. There are viral and bacterial pneumonias. Treatment depends on the cause.

Adequate oxygenation, hydration, maybe anti virals or antibiotics, depending on cause. Early treatment can save lives to help prevent bacterial pneumonia on top of viral.

Who are you talking about?

8. Sorry, it was someone I'd never seen before. So... is there a way...

... to know that a pneumonia is viral without doing a specific Corona virus test? This might let the talking head off the hook.
