Gov. Cuomo declared a state of emergency Saturday to deal with the worsening coronavirus crisis, as the number of cases jumped to 11 in the Big Apple — including one in Queens — and 76 across New York.

Saturday’s numbers more than doubled the cases in the city, which stood at five on Friday, the governor said at a noon press conference. There were 21 new cases outside the city, from 44 the day before, he said ...

(CNN)First lady Melania Trump is defending her work on the new White House tennis pavilion after a tweet she posted was roundly criticized as tone deaf amid the coronavirus outbreak.

"I encourage everyone who chooses to be negative (and) question my work at the ⁦‪@WhiteHouse⁩ to take time and contribute something good (and) productive in their own communities," Trump tweeted Saturday.

Melania Trump has been silent on coronavirus, which has spread to 28 states, though one of the three pillars of her "Be Best" initiative is "health and well-being of children" ...

UPDATE (March 7, 10:07 a.m. PT) — The number of presumptive positive cases of novel coronavirus in Oregon has more than doubled, according to the Oregon Health Authority (OHA) ...

... testing limitations may conceal how fast the virus is spreading in Oregon.

The Oregon Health Authority is currently limiting testing to patients who have severe pneumonia requiring hospitalization and to people who have had contact with confirmed coronavirus cases.

They just don’t have enough tests to check everyone. That means, until more testing happens, there’s no real way of knowing how far the disease has spread in Oregon ...

Police have been deployed to lock down entire blocks of a neighbourhood in Haro, a small town in northern Spain, after dozens of cases of coronavirus were traced back to a funeral held in the nearby Basque country two weeks ago.

Spain has so far confirmed 430 cases of the virus – 60 of which originated among people who attended a funeral service in the Basque city of Vitoria-Gasteiz, according to Spain’s National Microbiology Centre.

Thirty-nine of those 60 cases are in the neighbouring La Rioja region, according the local government, with most of them concentrated in the towns of Haro and Casalarreina. About another 25 cases are reported to have been confirmed in the Basque country ...

... Experts say the US has not come close to containing the coronavirus. They also say the small number of tests conducted in the United States so far has prevented the government from getting an accurate picture of how widespread the virus truly is.

"In the US it is the opposite of contained," said Harvard University epidemiology professor Marc Lipsitch, director of Harvard's Center for Communicable Disease Dynamics. "It is spreading so efficiently in so many places that it may be difficult to stop."

"In my scientific opinion and based on the available information, the situation is not contained," said Aubree Gordon, associate professor of epidemiology at the University of Michigan.

"As many states in the US report an increasing number of cases, I do not believe it would be accurate to say that COVID-19 is contained globally or in the US," said Jennifer Horney, professor and founding director of the epidemiology program at the University of Delaware ...

... Trump can live with patients with coronavirus staying on a cruise ship with uninfected passengers. Whether those patients or future patients can live with that decision is entirely the point.

... Trump is as — or more — concerned about the political fallout of the growing number of coronavirus cases in the United States as he is about how those cases should be handled ...

His preoccupation with that number, how many cases of coronavirus there are in the country, has been apparent since his first news conference on the subject on Feb. 26. Then, too, he focused on a number that was demonstrably too low ...

Trump has repeatedly downplayed the spread of the disease ...

HARRISBURG — Pennsylvania has confirmed its first two cases of the new coronavirus, one in Delaware County and one in Wayne County, and health officials hoped to track down people who had contact with them, Gov. Tom Wolf and state officials said Friday.

In Washington State it was as high as 33%...in a nursing home. It's 13% based on Florida figures.

I suspect it has more to do with the absolutely small number of tests that the Trump/Pence white house allows. At least we know if you die from coronavirus like symptoms they will test you.

Then there is this at the link:
"Vice President Mike Pence was visiting Florida on Saturday afternoon to meet with executives of the cruise ship industry, as the feds deal with several thousand people on a boat waiting off the coast of California, where 21 of 46 people tested were found to have the virus."

Not meeting with victims or their family. He's meeting with the poor, poor businesses who will suffer from the out of control spread of a poorly understood deadly virus. While Trump golfs and his Slovenian sex worker works on her new tennis court.
