Florida GOP donor convicted on corruption charges in North Carolina

A federal jury on Thursday convicted Greg Lindberg, a major Florida GOP donor, on public corruption and bribery charges in a scheme to influence a North Carolina insurance commissioner.

Lindberg, founder and chairman of Eli Global LLC and the owner of Global Bankers Insurance Group, was found guilty after a three-week trial in U.S. District court in Charlotte, N.C.

Lindberg emerged last year as one of Florida’s largest individual Republican donors, giving to a range of officials and sending $350,000 to committees supporting then-Senate candidate Gov. Rick Scott. Lindberg and his companies also gave nearly $80,000 to Florida Chief Financial Officer Jimmy Patronis, whose office houses the Florida Office of Insurance Regulation, and nearly $230,000 to current or future House speakers and Senate presidents.

Lindberg‘s sudden interest in Florida politics coincided with increased scrutiny from Florida insurance regulators after years of wrangling with Lindberg companies.

... Prosecutors .. said Lindberg conspired to funnel money to Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey in exchange for special treatment. In particular, Lindberg sought to replace or work around a senior deputy commissioner within Causey’s office whose job it was to scrutinize Lindberg’s Global Bankers Insurance Group, according to court documents.

Causey, who wasn’t accused of wrongdoing, alerted authorities and cooperated in the case ...

The case also ensnared former state GOP Chairman Robin Hayes, who previously pleaded guilty to lying to investigators. Prosecutors said in the news release that Hayes caused the transfer of another $250,000 in Lindberg contributions from the party’s coffers to benefit Causey ...

Lindberg’s attorneys have argued that their client didn’t commit a crime and that he was entrapped by Causey’s participation with authorities. Defense attorneys wrote in a legal brief this week that prosecutors didn’t show at trial that any personnel moves discussed by their client amounted to “a formal exercise of governmental power” ...

... The U.S. attorneys also want to offer evidence about political contributions for others besides Causey, including someone the government has identified as “Public Official A.” Public records and Gray have identified that official as U.S. Rep. Mark Walker, R-N.C.

The indictment said Walker spoke twice to Causey on Lindberg’s behalf. Walker was never a target of the investigation and committed no wrongdoing, Walker’s spokesman has said ...
