Wear nitrile gloves at the grocery store.

Last edited Fri Mar 6, 2020, 07:53 PM - Edit history (1)

They're fairly cheap at Harbor Freight and other stores.
1. They'll protect your hands while grocery shopping.
2. They'll remind you not to touch your face.

But since the gloves will pick up the virus and transfer it to things, it gives a false sense of security.

I'm washing my hands a lot wherever I go. If I must touch my face, I grab my collar and use the inside of my shirt to touch my face. I wash my face when I get home.

Thu Mar 5, 2020, 11:18 PM
Mar 2020

As soon as the gloves are off in the car or at home, you have to touch everything and is impossible to wipe or wash everything off that could be contaminated by previous person who may have touched those items.

Spouse and I were already taking every possible precaution this winter avoiding crowds and practicing all the hand washing, sanitizers etc. and not knowingly being around anyone who was sick but we still got bad colds. So I'm not too optimistic about avoiding this new virus although of course we will be avoiding public places even more and staying far from anyone who is coughing or who has told us over the phone about being unwell or feverish.

Fri Mar 6, 2020, 08:05 PM

I'm 78 and have mildish COPD.
Just did this at a doctor's office:

Put gloves on in car.
Did not touch face at any time.
Picked up no magazines.
Meditated(?) until called.
Peeled off gloves very carefully BEFORE I touched car door handle only touching wrists which had touched nothing and put in plastic trash (grocery) bag.
Sanitized hands and walking cane handle.

This is serious for us geezers.

To both you and potential them. And they are potentially dealing with huge germ loads. All day long. And getting a virus straight from a persons blood or other bodily fluid is nothing like picking up a box of Cheerios or a five dollar bill.

Plus, gloves can give a false sense of security when in fact you skin repels viruses just as well. And there is a whole protocol for taking them off. Ever notice how the first thing your doctor does after removing hisher gloves is wash their hands with soap and water?

Now masks are another story. We are being told mask aren’t helpful only because there are not enough masks! I agree they do not totally protect you from inhaling the virus. But it is impossible to touch your nose or mouth while wearing a mask.

Listen, I gave you my honest opinion based on some knowledge in the area and some opinion. In a very polite way. It’s out of line for you to go all snarky on me. If you don’t want to hear a different opinion to yours then don't throw the subject out there. Wear gloves if you want. But don’t think they are a magic screen. The minute you take them off do the exact thing you would if you had not been wearing gloves.

And experience. Oh well. People are getting freaked out and older people with health conditions are rightfully concerned.

I just worry that too many people wearing gloves think they can then behave in a manner different than if barehanded.

Went to town today and when I saw people I knew I asked about their take on all of this. The one I knew to be a trumper thinks it is all hype and she has underlying kidney disease. Still a lot of complacency among the older folks, with a dash of fatalism.

Isolation is never a good thing. If this virus is killing anything it's the economy and that's not going to end well.

We've been through this before. We've been through Zika Virus, we've been through West Nile, we've been through Mad Cow Disease, Bovine Flu, Bird Flu, I could go on and on. If we can get through those, we can get through COVID-19. The only difference is that the other diseases, we had a functioning government and a CDC that actually did its' job. These days I'm not so sure that can happen.

Avoid crowds as much as you can.

Don't touch your face with your fingers when you are out, use the back of your wrist.

If you start to feel ill and need to cough, do so in the crook of your elbow.

Wash your hands when you get home, before you touch much of anything. Wipe what you did touch with disinfectant..

Take this seriously enough to practice good hygiene. Don't get silly about it.

I've seen too many paranoid people glove up, go about their business, and touch their faces with their gloved hands. Gloves aren't magic and any contaminated surface you touch will contaminate the glove and spread the disease to you when you touch your face.

It's better and much more economical to train yourself to touch your face with the back of your wrist while you are out and about, then kill any virus of any type when you get home with soap and water.,
