They will pour their 100s of millions of dollars into Congressional, Senatorial, and state legislative races and this worries me.

(10,745 posts)Since they can't win the White House legally, they'll just try to salvage as many House and Senate positions as possible.

(52,256 posts)turnout for the presidential races can have a big impact on down ticket races, and it's hard for republican candidates if you can't get your base out to vote for the top of the ticket.
rmoney was always going to be a long-shot, but they need the election to be close enough to get people to vote for the congressional races.
simply put, it doesn't make sense to spend money ONLY on congressional races and give up on the presidential race. superpacs will shift some spending, sure, but they'll never let people think they gave up on rmoney. to do so would be to give up on congress as well.

(18,634 posts)I'm optimistic that Obama will win but afterwards it will be ten times as bad for him.
I think he's wrong about the behavior of Congress changing next term.
They will throw broad, extreme legislation in front of him that he will be forced to veto.
Then they can will blame him personally for preventing government from working.
They can present a hardcore Ryan budget that he can't approve and then blame Obama when the world economy crashes.
If he chooses SCOTUS replacements they will protest and stall the decision as long as they can.
I wonder if they can delay approving candidates for 8 years? I bet they'll try.
I don't expect them to negotiate at all because they aren't interested in solving the country's problems.
They simply want to discredit Obama and the Democrats no matter what the cost.
They have no interest in governing.
They just want raw, dictatorial power and will try to destroy anyone who gets in their way.
It's going to be a hellish 8 years unless, somehow Democrats or authentic Republicans get control of Congress, which is unlikely. (Authentic Republicans being politicians with a brain stem that allows them to negotiate legislation.)

(22,000 posts)The amount of turnout on election year has to do with the excitement at the top of the ticket. Obviously if it looks like Romney/Ryan are going to go down before the election it is possible that will depress Republican turnout. Maybe it's just wishful thinking or pure crazy talk on my part.
