A customer at an Olive Garden restaurant in Indiana on Saturday loudly demanded a server who was not black, an employee and an observer said. A manager acquiesced, and is no longer employed by the company.
Amira Donahue, a hostess at the restaurant in Evansville in southwestern Indiana, said the customer, a white woman, complained to a manager about her and the other black hostess working during Saturday's dinner rush.
"She made comments about me to my coworkers concerning my race and saying that I should work at a strip club instead," Donahue told NBC News on Wednesday. "She asked if I'm even black and if I am from here."
Donahue, 16, said the woman who was with a handful of other people, including two children was seated at a table that had a black server, at which point she became particularly irate.

(25,473 posts)No big loss. It's Olive Garden, there's always a revolving door of customers.
Glad they terminated the manager.

(7,820 posts)I dont know why this bothers me as much as anything else in the story, but directing so much hate at a child- with your kids in toe to witness this, just makes it so much worse to me.

(25,473 posts)That was the part that stuck out to me, as well. Telling a 16-year-old that she should be working in a strip club.

(25,473 posts)We've had a couple of similar situations here (central Texas) and in one, customers threw the guy out while others got management involved and made sure the employee was taken care of. It varies wildly, of course.
It is a little bizarre that no one intervened. And sad.

I did not serve a career in the USNAVY to watch Americans of color be bullied by loud mouth ignorant bigots.
