COVID-19 news update for 3/1/2020

Hello again everybody who reads these. Yesterday was a very busy day out here in the PNW. We now have a death from the virus being found in a nursing facility, an entire fire crew (first responders to the nursing home) in self quarantine, Our Governor declaring a state of emergency, and panic buying at the Costco!
Well, I'm going to read the news from around the world and post what's going on with the COVID-19.

The Times of Israel:

Health Ministry urges Israelis to vote, says no need to worry about coronavirus
16 special polling stations to serve the 5,630 people in quarantine; ministry, PM say outbreak ‘under control’

The director-general of the Health Ministry on Sunday said Israelis should not hesitate to go out and vote in Monday’s national elections, and should not be deterred by the deadly coronavirus.

“The situation is under control. Everyone who was infected with the coronavirus, we know where they were infected and this is important… it’s safe to go vote. Don’t hesitate… go vote,” Moshe Bar Siman-Tov said in a video statement.

Bar Siman-Tov said 16 special polling stations across the country have been set up for the 5,630 people who are under home quarantine after returning from trips abroad and there are special instructions for those individuals.

Gantz: Likud spreading false reports about coronavirus to hurt Blue and White
Centrist party accuses Netanyahu of planning to ‘disrupt election day’ by disseminating misinformation on the virus; Likud: There’ll be a vaccine before Gantz forms a government

Blue and White chairman Benny Gantz accused Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s Likud party on Sunday of spreading fake reports about the coronavirus to suppress turnout on election day among supporters of his centrist alliance.

“It doesn’t bother the Likud propagandists to promote with all [their] strength the message that there’s the coronavirus in Givatayim. Did you ask yourselves why in fact Givatayim? Because it’s a stronghold of Blue and White,” Gantz wrote on Twitter.

Al Jazeera:

Qatar bans travellers from Egypt over coronavirus fears
Egypt reported its first coronavirus case on February 14, saying the infected person was a foreign national.

German supermarkets report coronavirus panic buying
Although ministers have repeatedly warned against coronavirus hysteria, some supermarkets have reported customers bulk buying supplies. The number of cases in Germany has almost doubled in a day to 129.

Germans are slowly coming to realize that they, just like 50 other nations in the world today, could soon be facing a coronavirus epidemic. The president of Germany's Robert Koch Institute (RKI), the country's infectious disease prevention organization, said Thursday that he believes the new coronavirus could prove more deadly to Germans than the flu.

Lothar Wieler said he didn't know yet how high the mortality rate in Germany could be but added that there would be daily press briefings about the state of the country's containment efforts for the forseeable future.

BBC:

Coronavirus: South Korea sect leader to face probe over deaths

he leader of a religious sect in South Korea will be investigated over some of the country's coronavirus deaths.

The city government of the capital Seoul has asked prosecutors to charge Lee Man-hee, the founder of the Shincheonji Church, and 11 others.

They are accused of hiding the names of some members as officials tried to track patients before the virus spread.

South Korea is battling the worst coronavirus outbreak outside China.

The country has reported 3,730 cases and 21 deaths so far. More than half of all infections involve members of the Shincheonji Church of Jesus, a fringe Christian group.

Authorities say Shincheonji members infected one another in the southern city of Daegu last month, before fanning out around the country.

Coronavirus: 'Nothing ruled out' in government's virus battle tactics

No tactics will be "off the table" in the UK government's plan to contain coronavirus, the health secretary says.

Matt Hancock said an emergency "battle plan", drawn up if the virus spreads further, includes banning big events, closing schools and dissuading people from using public transport.

He told the BBC's Andrew Marr the plans were for the "worst-case scenario".

Mr Hancock said the UK remained in the "containment" phase with 23 confirmed cases - but more are expected.

The government contingency plans, which will be published this week, include that newly-retired doctors and nurses could be asked to return to the NHS.

If the outbreak worsens, people could also be urged to work from home.

Chinese manufacturing hits record low amid coronavirus outbreak

Factory activity in China fell at a record rate in February, as manufacturers closed their operations to contain the spread of coronavirus.

The country's official measure of manufacturing activity - the Purchasing Manager's Index (PMI) - dropped to 35.7 from 50 in January.

It shows the virus is having a bigger impact than the financial crisis that shook the world last decade.

The data also suggests that factories are struggling to find enough workers.

PMI figures - calculated with data from monthly surveys of private sector companies - are a key indicator of a county's economic health, and can move financial markets.

China makes up a third of world manufacturing and is the world's largest exporter, so this PMI drop - well below analysts' expectations - will have a knock-on effect on other countries.

Dominican Republic, Czech Republic recorded their 1st infections

Coronavirus cases surged in Italy, and France closed the world-famous Louvre Museum on Sunday as the deadly outbreak has now hit more than 60 countries and the death toll worldwide reached at least 3,000.

New fronts in the outbreak opened rapidly over the weekend, deepening the sense of crisis that has already sent financial markets plummeting, emptied the streets in many cities and rewritten the routines of millions of people. More than 88,000 around the globe have been infected, with the virus appearing on every continent but Antarctica.

Australia and Thailand reported their first deaths Sunday, while the Dominican Republic and the Czech Republic recorded their first infections.

Italian authorities announced that the number of people infected in the country soared 50 per cent to 1,694 in just 24 hours, and five more people had died, bringing the death toll there to 34. France raised its number of reported cases to 130, an increase of 30 from the day before, and said it has seen two deaths from the virus.

World economy conference with pope postponed due to coronavirus

ROME (Reuters) - A conference on the world economy due to take place in Italy later this month with Pope Francis taking part has been postponed until November because of the coronavirus outbreak, organizers said on Sunday.

The conference, organized by the Roman Catholic Franciscan order, was to have taken place in Assisi on March 26-28 and be closed by the pope on the last day. It has now been rescheduled for Nov. 21.

Organizers said the postponement was because many of the participants would not be able to travel to Italy. A number of airlines have reduced or canceled flights to and from the country. Participants from 115 countries had signed up.
