WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Donald Trump on Sunday said travelers from countries at high risk of coronavirus would be screened before boarding and upon arrival as the government scrambled to reassure Americans after the first death in the United States.
Officials from Washington state on Saturday said a man in his 50s with underlying conditions had died, and two of three confirmed coronavirus cases in the state had links to a long-term care facility in the city of Kirkland.
The Trump administration is scrambling to respond to the fast-spreading virus that originated in China through travel restrictions and widespread messaging on safety procedures, while working to avert public panic. A total of 68 cases have been reported in the United States.
Trump underscored efforts to prevent a further spread, amid growing criticism from Democrats about the administration's handling of the crisis.

(1,292 posts)but we are now seeing community spread here.
Screening travelers from other countries that have outbreaks wont stop it from spreading here, since we are already experiencing our own outbreaks.

(11,885 posts)When did he know it was a serious Health threat, and why did he lie saying it was contained when he knew it wasn't? He was well aware of it sooner than he'll admit to, and he intentionally mislead the American people by lying about it. He created fear by his lying, and caused the markets to drop so bad, because no one trusts anything he says. He couldn't have had a worse response, and everyone who heard him agrees, except others who fear his power of revenge if they disagree. The GOP are too scared to speak out against him.

None of the infected passengers were showing symptoms of the virus, triggering a debate between the State Department and the CDC. The State Department and a Trump administration health official wanted to send the passengers home on the chartered flight out of Japan anyway, the Post reported. CDC officials, however, warned against evacuating the infected, due to concerns over re-exposing healthy passengers to the virus. When State Department and administration officials decided to go through with the evacuation, the CDC's principal deputy director, Anne Schuchat, requested not to be included in the news release announcing the decision.
"CDC did weigh in on this and explicitly recommended against it," Schuchat wrote in an email to the State Department, a HHS official told the Post ...
