Earlier this week, a sexually explicit cartoon surfaced depicting Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg and featuring the logo of the Canadian oil company X-site. The image sparked outrage and an investigation by the Canadian federal police. Thunberg responded on Saturday: "They are starting to get more and more desperate ... This shows that were winning."

Narang said she called the general manager of X-Site, Doug Sparrow, asking him if he knew about the sticker that appears to depict the rape of a minor. He said he was aware of it, according to Narang, and his response was, Shes not a child, shes 17.

(5,942 posts)I wonder if he'd care to tell us at what age a girl or woman does become fair game for a depiction of rape.

(53,410 posts)There is no legal age where rape is legal.

(6,899 posts)In Colorado (as in Texas), 17 is a child.
All rape is illegal. Statutory rape is easier to prove.

(53,410 posts)The CEO of this oil company was dismissing the question about raping a child by saying Greta is not a child. In some minds he managed to change the subject from one of rape to one of consensual age. By falling into bickering about what laws make women minors is the real crime of rape is made secondary.
Its an old trick which evidently still works.

(6,899 posts)and therefore, to me and many others, doubles the outrage.

(53,410 posts)is a losing proposition. The tactic is a deflection away from the actual topic. The attempt to change the subject should be dismissed outright as the ploy it is and the original intent of the question should continue unabated.
After someone says such a thing the next question should be to ask that person how that makes a difference with rape.
