I strongly reacted to Trump referring to the Coronavirus as a "hoax". A lot of us are going to lose family members, friends and working associates (perhaps even among ourselves) if this virus goes pandemic. For the President to refer to it as a hoax is beyond irresponsible because of how many people will believe it - both his followers and other people too ignorant to know the difference. I can only hope that there will be serious push back from the American Medical Association, the nurses' union and anyone else in a position of power. But my question is this, did any of you get as strong a reaction as I did? I imagine so, but it would be nice to hear from you. I feel totally isolated right now wondering if this insanity will keep going on and on until the clock finally runs out on Trump and the Grim Reaper of Time finally catches up with him.

(111,110 posts)It is Trump's lies and division that are creating doubts and anxiety, in my opinion. In some people, it creates fears.
The majority of America know this, I am convinced.

(11,885 posts)Will come back to haunt him after its replayed for all to see and hear , and now suggesting more tax cuts which will benefit him and the wealthy not the poor or middle class, but he'll again lie claiming it as the truth. trumps promoting propaganda just like putin and Kim and others ruthless dictators do, and attacks the truth because it exposes them as brutal and corrupt liars and frauds. The markets are partly dropping from him claiming bs excuses , and his lying about it makes everyone not trust him on anything, and we're seeing the results of investors leaving the market from zero confidence in him to take care of greater serious problems he's causing from his cuts, and now muzzling the truth from the experts. trump will use this probable pandemic as a weapon against us, and to keep himself in office by declaration if need be.

(9,426 posts)if tRump or a member of his family came down with this "hoax"? I would feel so very sad. (not), Seeing Mulvaney smirking and telling people to ignore the warnings is an eye opener. I thought he was on his way out, after exposing the truth about the quid pro quo? Maybe the WH is running out of incompetent people to put in high office? Well, there is always Jared or even Ivanka.

That is what scares me about him calling this a hoax.
His lying and conspiracy theories are killing people now.

(9,426 posts)hesitate to go for medical help, for lack of insurance? How many people will get saddled with huge medical bills for treatment?
MontanaMama
(23,337 posts)So many Americans will decline getting tested/treated because theyre uninsured, underinsured or have high deductibles. Millions of people dont have paid sick days and live paycheck to paycheck and cannot afford to stay home. Factor all that into how many these people work in the service industry and have constant contact with the public and it is a recipe for nothing good.

(111,110 posts)We have not seen any large-number effect yet, but there is a lot of fear and trepidation. Why is that?
People simply cannot trust a liar. When something this unforeseen happens, people cannot believe what they hear from this White House. It creates anxiety, and fear in some people.
The people's fears are real. They are mostly created from a lack of trust, in my opinion.
We should keep our eyes and minds open.

(5,432 posts)Trump doesn't lie though.
He is simply putting forward his version of reality.
Whereas most people look at the world around them, make observations, and decide on the rules that govern reality, and work out what they need to do to adjust and survive in that reality, Trump does the opposite.
Trump simply thinks about how reality should be, and sees that in the world around him. The words he speaks reflect his version of reality. That there is much evidence that contradicts his version of reality doesn't register.
Corona virus is a hoax. Trump really believes that. If people get sick and start dropping dead, his vision will come up with a different interpretation. And his explanation will no doubt involve the evils he sees in the world: Democrats, Hillary, Obama, and the Deep State.
In short,he is a loaf short of a dozen, a brick short of a load, a nutter, a fruit cake, a Messiah complex looking for an admiring audience, a total wreck of a human being, has bats in the belfry, . . . . etc.

(32,017 posts)Nothing more, and nothing less. People with Cluster B disorders are an insidious menace (at best) to those around them, or they can be downright dangerous and deadly depending on the severity of the disorder. These disorders are progressive--they get worse over time. Trump is an advanced Narcissist at this stage in his life.

(28,811 posts)it's beyond irresponsible. and it's not just him. he has his surrogates out there pushing this extremely dangerous propaganda and saying despicable things about Democrats. I've been tweeting about this today.
i think we're on our own with this virus. the response from this government appears to be gearing up to look more like the response to the plague in medieval times than a proper one.

(4,623 posts)My mother has COPD and some other health issues. 2 years ago today, she had just been transferred from the ICU, where she was in an induced coma for a month, to a specialty rehab facility to help her get off the ventilator collar. After a couple weeks there, she spent another month in a different physical rehab facility learning how to walk again and regaining her motor skills. A cold which turned into bronchitis is what put her in the ICU. Covid 19 would likely kill her. Shes only 69.
We are so very thankful she recovered. The doctors in the ICU were pretty grim about her chances. It still makes me tear up.
Weve never been a family that runs to the doctor (we used to joke that a bone has to be visible or arterial blood spray present for one of us to go to the ER), but we learned our lesson. Mom waited too long to seek help for her chest cold it nearly killed her. By being extra careful to limit exposure to crowds and laying low during flu season, shes been able to stay healthy since her release. Now, the first sign of a sniffle and shes at the doc. Im dread the day the virus arrives in our area. With the long asymptomatic period, it could spread through the community before anyone is aware its happening- especially when those in charge are trying to downplay it.
The Orange Asshat calling this a hoax and the woefully inadequate plan has both me and my father pissed off beyond measure.
Our plan is lots and lots and lots of handwashing (we are near-obsessive hand-washers, anyway) and Mom will be self-isolating at home. Shes retired so thats not an issue. Dad is also retired, so hes limiting his trips out of the house as much as possible. We have her stocked up on Netflix, baking supplies, books, and crossword puzzles.

(58,706 posts)while the lethality rate may not be as high as SARS or MERS, it does seem to be more lethal than flu, and those with pre-existing conditions are very vulnerable to this kind of threat.
Yes, Trump and his admin will get people killed, and it is reprehensible.
