General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsChris Hayes on HHS Whistleblower report: "This is real real real bad."
So here's what appears to be chain of events:
The Trump administration repatriated infected Americans over the objections of the CDC.
HHS then sent federal workers to interact with the infected population without adequate training or protection
Then those workers went out into the public with no monitoring or testing regime in place.
And now the first US-contracted case has appeared right near one of the airforce bases where this all happened.
When someone at HHS raised alarms about all this s/he was criticized for hurting morale and then ordered to another position or be fired.
This is real real real bad.

and them let them leave to mix with the general population.
Do you think they are not capable of infecting us on purpose? Who would gain?
Invest in big pharma right now. Protective clothing alone will sell a billion more this year.

They ignored the CDC recommendations.
The buck stops with Trump.
He hires incompetent yes people and this is what you get. He is responsible.
Does anyone know if the person that made the decision to fly the infected people on the same plane as the uninfected people was fired???
Does anyone know if the administration will listen to the CDC?
James48
(4,441 posts)The decision maker to send HHS employees likely is a career employee who did not know/think themselves that their employees would be directly interacting with these returning employees- and when someone would have raised the issue, it would have been during or after their exposure, as HHS or similar federal employees in general have much poorer training for biological events as would a CDC employees.
Big picture- HHS is logistically handing out motel room keys, vouchers, pillows and blankets. The last time they were activated is likely for hurricane relief. They have no training for biological agents. They are NOT medical or CDC people, they are hurricane responders.
They show up at california base, get pillows , blankets and military barracks room keys to hand out. The Chinese returnees show up. The returnees arent in hazmat suits, so they walking up and get keys. Later, the CDC people walk in in full hazmat suits. The HHS people suddenly reside they are screwed. Tell their untrained bosses, who say- dont worry. Thats where we are today.

(12,712 posts)There has been some open discussion here, by some, that Trump has given many signals about his intentions, but I think looking into more is important to understand that.
I think that going with the stupidity option is buying into his act. You really have to watch him carefully to see that, but I have observed enough personally to realize that, if you agree he is a classic confidence man, etc., then you know the marks won't realize his game. It will not be obvious. It isn't to many.
People like catharsis and so, slinging mud and various judgements or assumptions are expected. If this were something normal or regular to our politics, they can be both fun and deserved. Ideas about his incompetence, maybe drug use, personality disorders are really missing the point. If I was pulling one over on a country, I would find that to be a fantastic success.
I don't expect anyone to take my word for it, but anyone call fall for it, in that case, he can easily embroil both sides equally. His history reveals that and his practice as a reality TV host even provided practice. If he was really that stupid, I think he would not be in the position he is and so adept at methodically destroying our system and democracy this well. Ah, that would be Dubya without his "brains" behind him. This is not the case. This is shrewd, precise and the motive is very clear. What is unique is that this con man can get the confidence of his base and whip up a character that takes care of the opposition by creating a ruse.
There's more, but i don't want to go on and on. I think you just have to look more deeply into it with that in mind. Consider it my opinion.
Oh, and check out Barr's speech to the Religious Broadcasters if you want to get better sense of the game plan, keeping in mind that this is the Attorney General of the US and he is only playing one arm of the game. Then, think about it.

(12,712 posts)When you have the pieces in place you start to really see it, (or you have lost your cookies). It jumps out. I have spent several months on it though, (reading, watching videos of him past and present, making comparisons, etc.) kind of like a detective, just for my own benefit because this anomaly has been bothering me for several reasons.
Then, you realize, of course! P.T. Barnum. Pulling that off is rather brilliant in the most nefarious, malevolent way possible. He has a certain flexibility depending on the situation, but he is consistent overall. However, it has been done in the past with different, contextual methods to manipulate the masses.
This would truly be the all-American, reality TV show version and it is scripted, directed and starring, you know who. A debacle like this works as a spectacle and a show, or as Baudrillard put it, The Simulation. Of course, we see how the casting has been going in order for his sequels.
I don't mind being wrong, but if we can get rid of this huckster, I would think somebody may even write about the showmanship aspect of this bleeding debacle brought to us by the Orange Ringmaster.

There's been an on going feud between him and CA on regulations and to top it off, he hates that the CA economy is stronger than most nations, and oh how Putin hates that one. (3,631 posts)This thing isn't as deadly as Captain Trips, but it is as communicable, because of the long silent incubation period and large number of people who never have symptoms despite being infected and contagious. There are now hundreds of people who have probably been exposed and not monitored in the US. There is no telling how many others they have infected. At least some of them will be traveling, and well it will be just like the chain letter montage in The Stand, except 3% instead of 98% will die. It looks like about 20% will need to be hospitalized.
If 3% of the US population dies that will be ten million people. 20% will mean 60 million needing hospitalization, and there are only about 800,000 staffed beds available in the US. That might increase the death rate significantly, as it may have in Wuhan. Everyone will know someone firsthand who has died, and it will make a big hole in the economy by disrupting production and supply chains. Maybe I should go now and re-read the section of the novel where the government is trying to cover up what is happening.

(2,356 posts)As the whistle-blower said, quarantined, untrained and unprotected federal employees in late January/early February assisted the cruise ship and armed forces evacuees at Travis Air Force Base in Solano County, CA. That is the same county that hospitalized woman is from, our first case of "community transmission." She was hospitalized February 15.

This isnt the same case of the woman at UC Davis that they dont know how she contracted the virus.
The newspapers are saying there are a total of 7 patients being treated in the Bay Area at various hospitals.
But the news from this whistleblower and the unexplained case of the woman at UC Davis is scaring the crap out of me that in the next two weeks we will hear about 100s of cases of infections all over - maybe 1000s....
