With steak off the menu, officials scramble to feed fussy eater Trump in India

Donald Trump has embarked on his first presidential visit to India, the world’s largest democracy – and home to the world’s largest population of vegetarians. Since Mr Trump is a noted beef-eater, in particular a lover of steak and burgers, gastronomically speaking, the visit will prove one of his most challenging.

It’s not all bad news for Mr Trump. India’s reputation for overwhelming vegetarianism is overstated, and it’s thought that more families eat beef at home than generally admit it.

Nonetheless, Indian president Narendra Modi has reportedly planned to serve Mr Trump an all-vegetarian menu. Will he succeed where others have failed?

A person close to the President told CNN: "I have never seen him eat a vegetable."

French fries, lots of French fries.

and they don't serve beef.

ETA: the McAloo sounds great - as do the rest of the vegetarian items. Being MacDonads, though, I expect they bear the same resemblance to good vegetarian food as an American McDonalds burger does to a decent hamburger.

Vegetarianism is a class issue in India and 70% of them are not vegetarians. Many people and children are starving because of the imposition of the upper-class views on them, especially when eggs, dairy products and other non-vegetarian food sources are prohibited. That's nothing to celebrate. Only beef might be an issue, but lacto-vegetarianism does have a limited range.

No, it is not "thought that more families eat beef at home." to me, it is that they would eat anything nutritious if they could get it to be fair. The upper-class, (Brahmins) have access to a much wider range of foodstuffs and they have less detrimental effects from being vegetarian. The poor are hungry and starving and the religious ideology does not serve them well in this case since malnutrition is rampant in some areas.

I guess India does not want those issues to be brought up and so we get ridiculous news as to how your are going to feed an obese, tin pot dictator and political carnivore. You can get Tyrant Chow(tm) and Demagogue Donuts(tm) anywhere these days. No problem. What is the point of trying to influence a ruthless meat addict to eat vegetarian, all things considered?

I have no qualms about Hinduism, etc., it's the way the ideology affects people that I am bringing up, and oh, silly news articles.

probably because of the local emigre and immigrant population. The vegetarian food - which does use dairy - is great!

A few years ago I saw a documentary about Air Force 1. They showed the kitchen with full large refrigerators (more than one large fridge), freezer full of food, and the cupboards full as well. Everything imaginable was there. I remember thinking how I would love to have half of what was stored on that plane.

So if the poor big baby needs his fatty beef fix, he has no worries. The aides will assure he won't go through the DTs.

They say he worries about being poisoned. I read he has people go to a random MacDonalds (or wherever), so the preparer won't know it's for him.

It's not easy being The Donald.

I wonder how many bodily fluid samples he's inadvertently ingested over the years.

I've only driven around DC on the belt parkway on my way up to NY or NJ. I had no idea they had a merch booth in the Rose Garden? I do want to visit DC someday for vacation. I would really like to see The Library of Congress. I would rather go when we have a better president. Heck even if no one wins this election and we have to shut the executive branch down for four years, that would be an improvement.

We were in India about 8 years ago, and the human poverty plus animal neglect was horrendous. Desperate people and animals were all over the streets of Delhi and elsewhere. Yeah, most of them don't eat cows but they also don't take care of them.
