Manufacturing Consent: Noam Chomsky and the Media - Feature, Documentary
This could be said to be essential and most educational if you are sincerely interested in having a deeper understanding of our society, culture, politics and economy.
Chomsky has been very controversial, but no matter how you interpret his contentions and insights, he does provide a good general overview to start with and a springboard for discussion and debate. In fact, if you disagree, that is fine also, but you are still going to benefit and expand your knowledge. At least you have someone who is well informed to bounce your biases off of.
I would say that this documentary on him is second to The Century of the Self by the BBC, (available on YouTube) for those who crave more information to make sense of where we are now. Our problems are multifaceted of course, but a society like ours is far from simple or cut-and-dried. Although this is a documentary on Chomsky, it is also a good primer concerning his work and perspective and worthy of your time.
Manufacturing Consent explores the political life and ideas of world-renowned linguist, intellectual and political activist Noam Chomsky. Through a collage of biography, archival material and various graphics and illustrations, Mark Achbar and Peter Wintonick's 22-award-winning documentary highlights Chomsky's probing analysis of mass media and his critique of the forces at work behind the daily news.
